Re: Checkin' In
Novel writing has been a lengthy process. I have always had a facility with the written word, which I assumed would qualify me for writing fiction. The wake-up call came when my former wife, who was reading my first drafts, told me, "Richard, your descriptions of the locations and of the land a...

Re: Checkin' In
I like hearing from you guys. I have been busy writing a novel. That occupies much of my time. My metal casting days appear to be over. Casting lost-wax investments single-handed is a bit much for a man my age. Some of my investments have weighed up near a thousand pounds. I have a gantry crane to h...

It's been cold here too. I've been wearing a long-sleeve shirt. It's been down in the low 60's at night. Brrrrrrr...

Re: We lost another good friend
It seems that metal casting and metal shaping don't have many young guys. I would guess that 90% of the guys under 30 now couldn't drive a nail with a hammer. But they can swing a mean video game.

Re: Happy Thanksgiving
I lived in Key West for some years back 25 years ago. It's a long way. 335 miles from Jacksonville to Miami and the another 150 to Key West. It's the motor homes that make the trip from Miami to Key West so bad. I usually left late at night to make that trip. The road was empty then. I went to colle...

Re: My Hand Planes
One problem is that people up there have sealed their houses up so tight there is no exchange of air. My house in Virginia had no insulation. The wind just kind of blew right through it. I would just throw more wood in the wood heater. I made a wood heater from a 55 gallon barrel. That thing could m...

Jerry,
One of the guys back on Alloy Avenue used to say, "If there are no photos, it didn't happen."
I am happy to hear that you melted some metal.

Re: My Hand Planes
Fascinating work. Keep posting. I have not posted much as I have not been in the shop or the foundry very much recently. I have been writing a novel.
