Re: Flux

WOW: What an education in fluxing. I cannot wait to start casting. Question 1: Do grain modifiers enlarge the grain size of the aluminum That would make it machine better.? Question 1.5: By "Machine better" what specifically are you referring to? Gumminess? Question 2: Can you de-gas and f...

Re: Big muller, little budget

Jammer: Nope, for the last twelve years it has been one project for me, making cameras. Starting with nothing and living in a studio apartment twelve years ago, I have finally bought a house which was essential to having a place to work, a woodworking shop that is extremely capable, a machine shop o...

Re: Big muller, little budget

Harry: I have a rule. I never make what I can buy for a reasonable price because my time is scarce. I was unable to afford a CNC machine with the travel I wanted so I had to make it. I could not buy a foundry furnace so I had to make one. I could have made foundry sand, but I was also able to buy it...

Re: A very simple furnace for breaking down wheels

Mike: There are no pictures yet, because nobody has ever made a folding field camera from aluminum before, but they will look a lot like the wooden camera made by Ron Wisner in this picture. They can take a digital back, but the object is the finest image possible so there would be very little point...

Re: Home made ingot molds

Hi Jammer: I have a friend who is a car guy (I always said car freak but he told me it is guy not freak) who knows a guy who gets me wheels for $10 each. The only problem with that is that they are 300 miles from here. So, every time my friend comes to see me he buys ten wheels from his buddy and br...

Harry:

A pit would be infinitely superior as far as I am concerned, I just haven't got room for one.

Re: A different furnace

Helmo: Thank you. It was my error. Jammer: The furnace is solid refractory cast in three sections, the bottom 4 inches or so where the tuyere is. Is it still a tuyere if I use it to put the burner in or is it called something else? Next is the center section which rides up and down on the vertical c...

Re: A different furnace

Everything here on the forum was fine. I screwed up when closing my photo editing software and closed the window. Harry, there is nothing you can do to help me not make mistakes with my new computer. I finally bought a Mac and it is taking a little getting used to. It was my fault not your awesome b...

Re: A very simple furnace for breaking down wheels

Nice stack of ingots, but I must ask, what do you do with all those g clamps, looks like you've cornered the market :) Mike Hi Mike: Thanks. Well, the guy at the woodworking store said over the loudspeaker that he needed to get rid of all those clamps on that table in the center of the store and he...
