I actually melted some metal.

Post by Jammer »

I got out and fired up the small furnace. I melted about 10 pounds of Bronze. Turned out to be way more than I needed. I had the pattern all set up with the "New" Petrobond I mixed up 2 years ago. I'll have to admit, the mold looked great and was really clean looking. The bad thing or things may have been metal a little cold, sprue too small or pour too slow. All I got was a very good casting of the sprue and it froze off right at the casting.
It took longer than expected and I got too hot. Now the wife is mad at me. I thought I would be finished before it got too hot. No pictures this time, maybe next, but I'll have to sneek out. :D 8-)

that sucks, and hopefully you get cooled back down soon. It was ok here for a few in the morning, then the sun came out and it became so hot and humid that you could barely breathe. I thought after last month, it was supposed to cool down and have a cooler august and stay cool, but evidently the weather didnt get the memo or something, lol. Through all of the storms all over today, we've yet again not had a single drop of rain here, so everything is in desperate need of water. It's been around a month and a half with no rain, so everything is getting pretty crunchy and extra flammable here, lol. So no chance to get any casting done here, and the smoke from canada has been so bad out that I ended up with damage to my lungs and throat from it around a week ago, so that put me out of comission for the past week.

I wish I could do some casting right now, I have a bunch of patterns to do up, but need to break down some aluminum again since it's all in wheel rim form, and you cant exactly take the sledge to that stuff to break it up, lol. I have 2 piles of stuff to cast out, so was hoping to get that done before too long.

We had a big storm last night. Dumped a bunch of rain in a short time, then went right back to 90+ degrees today. I felt bad most of the weekend and then started feeling better.
For the wheelium, I used a weed burner to heat some up to hot short temp and busted sections out with a hammer.

We just got around 10 mins of a nice rain here that seemed to just pop up out of nowhere, and now it's over. Hopefully more comes in, but Im not crossing my fingers, lol.

Yea, Ive tried doing hot short breaking, but I usually have to use a bonfire to get them hot enough, and by the time it gets to that point, they just melt and then it just wrecks the metal. I need to learn how to do that correctly one of these days, lol. I dont have a weed burner anymore, and as long as it took to get one propane tank refilled, and how much it cost to do it, I rather not use propane to do it if all possible, lol. I thought about just making up a stack/scrap melting furnace out of a 55 gallon drum and stick the oil burner in it.

Jerry,

One of the guys back on Alloy Avenue used to say, "If there are no photos, it didn't happen."

I am happy to hear that you melted some metal.
