you do the same thing by having the nozzle back up in the pipe about, with your three inch pipe, probably 3/4" which will cause the flame to hit the edge of the pipe which will be red hot. Refractory flare will do the same thing and hold all of the pressure cone in the flame.
I normally run mine with the burner back up in the refractory. just makes it burn better. I ever get around to redoing the wall, I want to do like Chastian did in that I want to cast the burner port in a piece of pipe and have a full round flare not one thats got the side cut out of it.

And your right it doesn't really take a lot of propane in that burner stream to make a hell of a difference in the way the thing burns. you know they been running big burners on combined fuels for a long time, specially where they can't get all the gas they need, they make up the difference with oil or someother fuel, even to mixing too gasses.
