Welcome to FoundDreaming

Post by Harry »

FoundDreaming came about in a way that many things in my life happen. While toiling one day shoveling sand to mix the concrete floor of my shop my mind was wandering as it often does. For a few weeks I would visit off and on the topic of coming up with a name for my Foundry venture and at this moment as my body was busy humping sand my mind was looking for options away from the task at hand. It occurred to me what I was doing at the moment, something akin to a runners high, the plateau you can hit when your body goes into automatic mode and your mind takes off on it own. It occurred to me I had just found myself dreaming while in the middle of shoveling literally tons of sand and founddreaming immediately screamed out at me as a homophone of foundryman which is what I was working to become so at that moment I knew what to name my venture and "I was found dreaming" found itself scribed into the fresh concrete in the doorway leading out to my foundry.

FoundDreaming is for the foundry man. There are plenty of sites to teach how to cast metal with BackYardMetalCasting being the one I would recommend anyone to that has the interest in melting metal. My hope for this site is that it will in time become more of a gallery of processes and projects that are the result of the accomplished foundry men (and women of course) who have stepped up with the commitment of refining their foundry and abilities. To that end the focus here will be towards products and how to get piles of them from piles of scrap or ingot with pattern making squarely in the middle. This is all about making a foundry into a viable business. The FoundDreaming site will be both a collection of pages dedicated to the construction and use of a small foundry and a sales tool for not only my own but also the products of others.

With the inherent dangers associated with melting and casting metal it is intended that this site is for adults though I will not exclude anyone because of age as there are some very responsible and talented younger people out there whose interests have lead them down the foundrymans path. With this in mind this forum will be kept somewhat clean in terms of language and images but I will forewarn everyone now that if you are here you are considered and adult who can make their own decisions about what you read and view and these pages may contain images or language that may not be considered work safe or appropriate for children or people who are oversensitive about nudity (art) or colorful language. This is not an invitation to post pornography in words or pictures rather it is an indication of freedom of speech that will find a balance here, nor is it an invitation to be rude or abrasive to others. The idea is to feel free in speaking our minds while moderating ourselves and having a thick enough skin to take the criticism of others without it becoming to personal.

The beauty of this site, Harry, is that it's just in the sprouting stage. The sky's the limit at this point because if you took any other forum well underway and attempted to revert it's internal work'ns to something different it could turn into a nightmare of confusion and disfunction. Having everything fresh, and open to suggestion by members as it's in development you stand the chance of developing something unique and refined by those having experienced one forum or more in how they were set up and always felt something could have been better refined.

I honestly like the idea you mentioned about this forum being member focused, giving members a sense of exposure and opportunity to "invest" into something greater. That's what I've wished for on other forums. For instance, on BYMC each members contribution is scattered throughout a massive amount of posts and threads. It would be a great relief to be able to log on and go directly to some member's personal section and check out their digs and projects they have under way. Other areas on the forum that pertain to members and guest's input regarding "ideas" they're working on to develop some new widget, burner or whathave you is good but if I'm eager to get home and check out what W3 has going on as a personal "new" modification to his shop I can bypass all the guesswork and head straight to his studio thread and get my fix. Everything personal related to projects W3 has going on is all contained within that section. Likewise, would be for F.C.'s Studio, or young Bill's, Mite's, etc.

Just so you know, I heard you loud and clear about Lionel's lack of respect to the site and his absense of participation. Members who have shared on that site made it the attraction and benefit it has been to others today. Who knows, maybe his new "move" of the site to supposedly better digs might be good, but I'd wager his input and his lack of vision for site development will remain a constant. Your site gives me the opportunity to plant roots and share what I know of this field and you have my attention and support. Treat me no different than cattle in a chute and I'll buck, blow snot in your pocket and find new digs to hang out in. That said, I'm seriously hoping Murray will join us. That man has some mad skills and talent I respect. Bob S, as well.

Believe me the last thing I want is a pocket full of snot

I hear ya on Bob, Murry and several others like Kent and even though they havent posted in awhile sandcrab and Abby... loads of others too. I am quite pleased at the crowd who has already signed up here in just a couple days though. This group can make one hell of a forum.
