todays slave labor in the heat of the shed first up is the one and only
Shop Monster my sidekick
Image
Second is one half of the flask that this thing will be poured in. yep its full of sand
Image

Third is where I rammed up the inner half of the pattern
Image

I ended up with a couple of small tears but I don't know if thats because of me or the sand not being rammed up as hard as it should of been, its in one heck of a place to ram just have to keep trying till I figure out if its me or the foundry gods messing with me.

there were a couple of other spots but they were tiny and I can live with them.

Normally that shouldn't be a problem, but since it spins, you need the balance. Maybe you can figure a way to balance it after it's cast.

doesn't spin fast enough to worry about it, the one thats one it now has hunks broke out of it. I've rammed the thing up about 4 times now and everytime it pulls out different, the last time it ripped out one the big sections between the gussets, like the first time I did it and it pulled out two of them.

It has to come out clean as I plan on making a match plate with all the gating on it.

If I have to I'll remake the thing with gussets to match the other side and sand the inside a lot better before putting in the gussets and use something besides yellow pine to make the rim.

oh yea remember what you see in that last photo is going to be the top half of the mold

try ramming not quite so hard, plus try rubbing graphite into into the pattern

if you look at the last photo were that tear is I think is from me bumping the pattern into the sand just as it cleared,

the not ramming so hard won't work as that is the top half of the mold, and it has to be rammed pretty hard to hold together with them big hunks of sand hanging there in the open.

I've used graphite on other patterns without a lot of luck, it all goes back to the pattern if it won't pull the pattern is wrong. I knew the gussets in said pattern half were too thick, but they were already glued in when I realized it, so by the time I finally arrive at a solution to the problem I could of probably made a new pattern half.

another thing is that this thing has to pull clean as I want to make it a match plate, which will have to pull clean first time everytime. Hopefully I won't have to pour it more then once.

As to the gating I have it figured out as to what I am planing on doing, will let that cat out in a few days after I get done with this molding problem.

One thing about a pattern like this is that you learn a lot or you quite and go home, and I'm not quitting, I started this and I'm going to finish it, it just might take a couple days longer then I planned.

Mike hows the shoulder, you can come help me if your bored :D :D .

I tried ramming the thing up again but it didn't work so instead of getting PO'ed and trashing it, I took a break and started work on the crank handle that I'm missing, in my research and such I found out that the cranks were cast out of ductile iron, so I figure NiBrAl should not only look damn good but also be strong as superman and I got a couple big bronze bearings to pour it out of.

So first the disappointment of the morning.
Image

next up is photos of the crank in order of operation.

And I did a little work on a belt sander that I been hoping to make, the upper idler wheel an shaft with the pivot that will allow me to track the belt.
Image

I did some trim work on the pivot and narrowed it down by a half inch taken off of each end. I plan on drilling a couple of ears to weld to some 2 inch tubing and use shoulder bolts to mount it with so it will pivot up and down for tracking.

So... what I "think" you've told us is this half of the mold is the cope (top) which is packed first, correct? If so, let me know... I have your solution for possibly a perfect draw. Will have to sketch out what ya need to do and what you need to adjust with your sand to accommodate it. This is green sand, correct? That's important to know, as well.

Also, if you haven't sorted out how you're going to gate it, keep in mind you'll also have to have some inventive ways to incorprate some resevoirs and "chills" to assist in the coordination on how it needs to cool without puckering or tearing the hub loose from the fins. In a sense, you'll need a good third more metal than the piece will take to fill to assist in feeding it while it cools and shrinks. If the piece being cast is near your limit on melt you'll have to make yourself another quick cheap furnace set up (along with crucible and yoke to deliver the added melt to the mold) and enlist a friend to assist with the pour. That, too, is reasonably easy and cheap to make, especially if you have a used fall back crucible on hand you can use.
