yea, thats usually what I do, but the thing is, you need 8 cutters for a single DP of gears vs the method I was talking about which would do the whole set with one single cutter. It would take less time, and as long as it is kept sharp, it'll cut as many gears, no matter how many teeth you want to do with just one cutter. I was going to design my cutter that the tooth form would be replaceable so I could fit other DP gear cutters on it too to cut gears for other things too.

The one place I was at, I did single point cutting of teeth alot, just using a fly cutter but it defenitely took forever. If I had known about the hobbing method, I could have just made a single cutter and it would have saved alot of time in the long run, expecially how many gears I was making and fixing.

Anyways, I cant wait to see your shaper up and running and cutting stuff :P

I don't know, about one hob cutting all the gears that a set of involute cutters will, using a hob you would still have to have on to ut the proper gear profile.

anyway I found a different way to fix the collet chuck, I made a brass shim and put in it front of the ring gear which set it back deeper into the pinions.

now if my heart will just stop playing games with me so that I can get back to doing what I want to I'll be a little happier.

yea, well the way it works, it's just the 29 degree or 40 degree angles, then when you run the cutter through it, middle tooth cuts the depth of the gear tooth, and nearby teeth on the cutter cuts the relief as you index the gear around. Im glad to see that you had gotten it fixed, or at least a solution to fix it.

I know how you feel with the body not cooperating, I know that all too well anymore.

I've known about the body not cooperating for a long time now, damn old ticker is just about wore out and I guess I don't take as good of care as I should.

First time I ever ran that old Cincinnati Shaper that I have I ran it on a 5 HP motor off of an old Sears Rototiller

so what all have you machined up on the old shaper?

I have a small one and I use that thing all the time, I wouldnt know what to do without it really, lol. Actually, I know what I'd do without it, I would most definitely go crazy again, lol. Ratchet pawl mechanism broke in it a few weeks ago and was without it for around a week, I was going nuts and family just went and bought silver solder brazing rods to get the thing fixed to stop the madness, lol.

i had to make a lot of parts for the Cinci to replace stuff that had been broken and throwed away and then someone cobbling i t back together.

Weather is warming up so I might see about circulating the oils in it, I haven't ran it in quite a while, may be fun to make some chips with it again.

I sold my 7" delta to a guy that wanted one to mess around with.

cool, cant wait to see it making some chips, lol. I could watch a shaper running all day, and Ive litterally done that before, lol.

I tend to record alot of the stuff Im doing on my shaper and put it up on youtube, mainly because I like showing my brother what I was working on, and people go absolutely nuts over that little shaper and what it's capable of, lol. Here's my videos:

Nice looking Elgin, now you need a plating tank.

Yes, stay out of the ER, I went several times and they figure out that I was having anxiety attacks. Gave me a chill pill and I haven't been back since. I don't have A-Fib though.
