Steam Engine Flywheel

Post by PatJ »

This is a flywheel I cast in gray iron for a steam engine that I am trying to build and publish in a magazine.
This item was developed from a photo of a real engine from the 1800's, and modeled in 3D at half scale using Solidworks.

The pattern was printed on a high end 3D printer by a company that does that sort of thing.

Sand was manufactured commercial-grade foundry sand, with resin-binder.
Resin binder and manufactured sand are the only way to fly if you can afford it and can find a supplier willing to sell it to you. You have to buy a substantial amount of it.

My problem is I work full time, and get tied up on large projects for work, sometimes keeping me out of the shop for a year at a time. Work sucks, but you got to eat.

Looks great Pat, what's the diameter? I know about needing to eat! I went from 70-80 hours a week ..PLUS!!! to 0 in one day. That was 2 years ago and I'm still not used to it.
