Traded addictions

Post by Harry »

The wife and I got off cigarettes on the 7th of this month so we are just a little over two weeks with no tobacco. We are still getting our nicotine fix using eCigs and I have to say I am amazed at how easy the change was. Of course with my OCD I have jumped into the middle of all of this with both feet and have been having a blast buying all sorts of stuff. First off was the gear/hardware for vaping as its called then came the flavors, base and nic for mixing our own along with the assorted glassware to set up a proper laboratory :)

So now we have enough stuff to gear up not only us but can send out loaners and we are concocting up some pretty damn tasty juice on the cheap compared to buying online. The DiY on the juice is two pronged, the savings of course but that pales to the savings already being realized over $55 a carton cigs but the second part is having a backup plan should the FDA decide to regulate or otherwise limit the availability of nic for our juice. Got enough in the freezer for at least a year for us and family and friends. So far we have 7 people that simply put down the smokes in favor of something that tastes better, still had the hand/exhale and nic... unbelievable how easy it was/is.

Now the best part, no more wheezing/rattling lungs when I lay down at night. No more coughing in the middle of the night or any other time for that matter. And that was after just a couple days. We are now just over two weeks in and the other day we took a mile and a half walk and it felt great, before my lungs would have burning after the first quarter mile. I am now a fanboy and if you get too close to me with a smoke I will be looking to convert you too :)

Right on, Harry. I smoked for just over 20 years then quit with two accupuncture sessions (one one day, the other the next) total cost was 80 bucks. Stayed smoke free for another 20 plus years.. not once with a simple craving whatsoever. That second evening after that last puncture session I hit a smoke filled bar and downed two pitchers of beer between two chain smokers... not so much as a cringe. It was as though I never smoked in my life. But yeah, your wind gets much better quite rapidly, as does your restful sleep AND food will start tasting much better. Lots of perks not smoking... especially in savings.

Sadly, under intense stress, anger at the world, life changing situations, etc. etc., I reached for a cigar 'cause I was starve'n from nothing to eat all day and knew a smoke would quell hunger (military training). Because my lifestyle was the same in intensity over the next several months I lit up again and again and again puff'n on them stogies. I tried to keep it to one mini cigar a day, just puff'n a little here and there till it was a nub by nightfall. One turned into two a day... then three a day, etc. You know the addiction, as do I. I'm up to smoke'n a pack of Ciggarillos every three days which was what i used to smoke in Winstons for those previous smoking years. I vowed I'd pull that habbit again this year but the past six months have been intensely stressful and it just amped up a notch over a family crisis that just surfaced. Shit... ain't life a bitch sometimes!! that, too, shall pass eventually... THEN I'll get back to my vow. If I try it without treatment I'll go ballistic on someone in a snap... this is something I seriously need to keep in check, not just with my job but in this family crisis situation at hand as well. Especially over this family matter. Long sorted story there, best not dwelled upon here.

I may be hit'n you up for some input on that new fandangled contraption there, Harry. I've seen folks use'n 'em and thought it was too weird and hokey. I seriously don't like smoking that much but I have always enjoyed the flavor of a good smoke, especially pipes and ciggars!! Even when I was a very young kid it smelled good and sweet to me.

No Sweat FC, I have to say this sure seems to me like nirvana in getting to keep smoking but not smoking. I'll let you know what I bought for the wife and I from aquavaporcigs.com as starter kits. The 510 is about the size of a cigarette and the eGo is like a cigar, both are too heavy to just hang from your mouth if you are a no hands smoker that wont happen, have to take a break from what you are doing to get your fix on.

510 ONE starter kit with the PCC which is a charging case and will recharge the cig battery about ten times while you are on the go. I was swapping the battery about half a dozen times a day and it was kind of a hassle but works. My bigger problem with this setup was the small juice capacity of the cartridges. Most hold about 1/2ml or less and I am at about 3ml or more a day so that meant more swapping or refilling.

eGo T kit, this worked out great with a little over 1ml capacity on the tank but the atomizers went to crap too quick and they dont offer any way to easily rebuild them. The coils are still good but they need the wicks replaced when cleaning and short of a DiY that is probably more trouble than worth its just not happening. The batteries in this kit work great and the threading is the same 510 threading as the kit above so you can mix and match all kinds of stuff. Using an ECHO-E cartridge now that holds 3ml, has a nice fit and look and is only about $3.

These cartridges or atomizers only last so long then you have to replace them so finding economy in them helps the bottom line a little more. There is an eGo C tank with a replaceable atomizer but even those are $5 each, I will probably try it and see how long they last eventually. Also there is a vision stardust tank/cartomizer that is out of stock everywhere and wont be back until next month because of the chinese new year if you can believe it, anyhow will be checkin this one out too.

Basically if you dont mind a cigar size device I say go with the eGo, carry a spare battery and you would be good for a whole day. I got the 900 sized batteries and some 1100 from another outfit that are barely bigger, these dont seem to last any longer but they are unregulated so they put out a higher voltage which might be something you like if you are after a stronger hit.

All I can say is that as a nearly 4 decade pack a day smoker I was able to quit from the first minute I got a PV (personal vaporizer) and it just gets better as I try out different stuff and juices. You can easily get set up for $100 and I was spending that in about two and half weeks of smoking so no brainer there. I did go crazy of course the way I always do things and now I have a crapload of flavors to play with and mix my own juice. Also just picked up a loter of 100mg nic juice that will dilute down to 20mg for use. Probably enough juice for a dozen people for a year or so. There was a sale going and like I told the wife I would feel real stupid not spending the $100 or so for it now and sticking it into the back of the freezer and in two months some kind of ban on it comes along. Big tobacco is putting a shit load of money into trying to squash ecigs because they are so effective and cheap, if you got stock in phillip morris I would say its a good time to sell because if they cant kill the tide on these they are going to lose a huge portion of their addicted base in the coming years. Not only are they killing them off at a good pace but now there is a viable alternative that I think just about anyone who wants to quit smoking can easily turn to.

So I'll wrap up this long winded promotion and just say, whatever I can do to help just ask and I will try to answer any question or point you to a good place to break out your credit card.

I used Skoal and Copenhagan for close to thirty years, first few times I tried to quit about three hours and I would go get a can. last time I quit I throwed the empty can in the trash and haven't had a dip in close to three years. didn't do squat for my lung capacity, but helped the ole ticker out a bunch.

Any way you can kick the tobacco David is a good way. I figure I will eventually cut back the nicotine but for right now I am just loving not having the smoke and tar along with 400 or however many chemicals they put into smokes to make them more addictive.

700 butts that never made it into my ashtray so far, the banner above will update each time this page is loaded. Plus those figures are x2 when you figure both my wife and I so closing on $400 not spent on cigarettes. If I could just quit buying stuff I might move into the black soon :)

Good for you Harry. It took my wife 2 tries (and she's a stubborn woman) to kick the habit after she watched her grandmother die from cancer. Both times, she tried smoking after a few weeks without and it made her sick. The last time she said "This is stupid" and has never smoked since.

Best of luck to ya, I'm sure we are all pullin' for ya...

"This is stupid"

There it is..that's the point you get to when it becomes a lot easier to quit. If you think about it, Golf even makes more sense than smoking.

I'd rather smoke and die miserably than warm up to play'n a game of golf.... What gets me about golf is they always admire them morons as being "athelets". How the hell does walk'n around a manicured green and whack'n a damn ball constitute being an athelete? None of 'em work up a sweat. Now, FOUNDRY work will give ya a damn good work out!!!
