Blacksmithing Bits

Post by cae2100 »

hey, I know that quite a few of you guys on here also tinker with the forging stuff along with the metal casting, and was just curious what kind of stuff you guys have made?

I mainly just was tinkering around with my forge just making lathe and shaper tools that I found in old early-1900s books, but thats about it, lol.

I've made some home stuff for hang plants or other stuff and for the fire place.

cool, some really nice stuff there. How did you make the shovel scoop part/form? I was thinking about making one and most people just have a shovel form on the swage block or carved into a stump, but I dont want to do that to a stump for just making one shovel, and dont have a swage block either, lol.

Mostly on the anvil and on a piece of round stock. Just kept heating and tapping into shape.

Mike, have you tried to switch hammer hands. May be awkward for a while but you may get used to it.
Your slack tub seems to be slacking! ??

CAE, I should have said "the end of a piece of 4 inch round stock". Also, used the vice a lot.

very nice forging setup mike, I dont think you would ever have trouble finding the right pair of tongs for the job in that place, lol.

ah jerry, that makes alot more sense now, lol. I dont think I have anything that big, but I may have some 3 1/2" pipe around here somewhere that I could use instead for that. Thanks for the idea.

I have tried switching hands, but it feels odd, I've been right handed too long ;) ;)
@ CAE. you'd be supprised how many times we just don't have the right fitting pair of tongs
We have a retired proper blacksmith that comes in every Tuesday, and just watching and asking questions is very informative, hes great to watch and learn from, he enjoys teaching and telling us were we're going wrong
