And the last pic...

Keep in mind there still needs some tweak'n of the head and neck, particularly on the left side. Needs some added muscle mass at the back of the skull area and down that neck some. That'll get done in the clay, though... I'm done fuck'n with that damn foam. Geeze what a freak'n mess it makes carve'n and sculpting that stuff. I'll wager I'll be finding bits of that shit around my shop for the next couple years. My next piece will be foam board glued together to make the main body parts. Either a set of cubs to go along with this bear sculpture, or a pair of Heron birds, one landing/one taking off in unison. There's a gorgeous landscaped planter in town at a main intersection right in between two banks. I've been given tentative permission to display the Herons there till they get sold.

Yep... I DEARLY LOVE THIS STUFF!!! Can't come up with the words, nor enough of 'em, to describe how good it feels to finally be free to create from passion and not concern myself with liabilities I've dealt with for so many years. ;-)

I've been derelict in posting on this bear's progress. To update everyone, the body got patched of air pocket voids left from carving off foam. Then I sealed the entire body with a laytex based roof sealant that's pretty darn tuff once it cures, and flexible & won't crack. Decided not to use the bondo... saving that for another project later on. The idea of sealing the body was to encapsulate any possible foam bits that could get into the clay skin I'll be applying for detailing. I want to "save" this clay for use on other projects once this bear's completed. The clay I'm using is a vegetable oil based clay product that's commercially available and used by many professional sculptors. Wasn't my choice, by the way... my investor was the one that bought and provided it for me to use. I normally make my own clay. But this stuff is consistent with each box and a bit less tacky than what I'm used to using/making (which is good). Some spendy shit, though... 200 lbs w/shipping cost her over $750. That's like daily pocket change to her, though... so.... hell yeah, i'll use it. :-) She's been taking instruction from a professional sculptor she met (one on one, two days a week sessions) and felt the clay the artist was using was what everyone should be using, so she ordered it through that artist's account to get a discount. Otherwise, if I was to purchase the stuff myself it'd cost me over a grand. Maybe I'm in the wrong business and should be make'n sculpture clay for profit.

Worked the past couple weeks get'n an old heavy as hell slab roller cleaned up, de-rusted, serviced, tuned and back into operation. It was given to me almost 10 years ago by someone who got tired of move'n shit around it all the time in their shop. They never used it (it was given to them) and figured they never will so... they passed on the white elephant to me, HAHA... Hell, YEAH!! Plus, I patched the bear's hide, sealed it, and also began fabricating/sculpting a jaw set w/teeth and tongue that'll custom fit into the mouth cavity when I'm apply'n the clay layering over the head to lock it in. The upper dentures are made, they fit, (and look bitch'n, by the way) just need more refined detailing before lock'n 'em into the mouth. Today been work'n on the lower set and tongue. Ought to be able to finish those tomorrow or Saturday.

And last weekend the wife and I decided I needed a break and that we both needed to spend some quality time together, so we packed up Friday afternoon and headed to the Oregon coast and stayed in a gorgeous beach front condo apartment w/balcony overlook'n the beach for 3 days. Weather was drop dead gorgeous, to boot. When we weren't swill'n back wine on the balcony, or bang'n heads on the headboard, we hit bars, restaurants, walked the art district and checked out glass blower shops that have a viewing area (about 10 ft. away from all activities) so bystanders can watch all day all the processes involved. They do some beautiful work. I'm kinda, sorta, of the mind to build me one of them glass furnaces and experiment blow'n my own glass art. I know.... got to get what's on my plate done first. It looks easy and relatively simple, just takes some experimentation to get the hang of it. No greater amount of tooling than what we use melt'n metal... less, actually. And everyone doin it were wear'n cutoffs, T-shirts, and sunglasses. No gloves. And one of their furnaces (on its side on a stand, open face) can also be used as a forge for knife make'n and iron work.

All in all been busy most of the time and still on schedule (actually a bit ahead) with this bear. I've got pics show'n the bear coated with the sealant and one show'n the rough made upper set of teeth and tongue but figure it best to post pics once the clay skin starts get'n added for a before and after view, then another with the jaw set in place. Figure early next week for the next set of photos.

A few days away is good for the body and mind. Glass blowing is cool to watch :) .When all this insurance shit that I'm dealing with is done and dusted I told the wife heading off for a few days, might end up out Longreach way, which is is about 750 miles north west of here, way out in the outback

never had any desire to mess with molten glass, too brittle for most things I mess with. But there are people that make lovely things out of it.

Frank the clay that you make is it sulfur free?

No, David... the clay I make has always used axle grease, micro-crystline & paraffin, and standard powdered ball clay (white) which after a few crayons added I get a dark gray color. It's fairly tacky in texture which minimizes need for work'n a piece onto another to get it to adhere... best worked in an unheated shop with temps below 60 degrees. Any hotter and the tackiness increases to a point where it gums up my tools. But, once I've worked it into place I can come back later and smooth it out much easier by hand and after that sets a while unattended it chills and becomes fairly hardened and has the same properties as that which got handed me to use on this bear.

After this morning's coffee mill'n about around while inspecting this bear, I decided to roll out slabs of "my clay" and build up fat rolls of the bear's hide with it (today) then commence rolling out 1/4" slabs of this spendy shit and apply'n that as a surface coat for final detailing. Can't see further need to mess about change'n the anatomy on this critter so TODAY he gets dressed and ready for installing its teeth once they're completed.

Due to the "balance" I've designed into this bear's stance will have to work the butt and thigh areas first to give them some back leaning weight then work the front face & head areas to bring the stance back into balance. I'll keep doing this (back to front) in increments till the hide's done keeping the bear in balance to minimize stress on any appendage or joint from flexing.

With the bear being so large Frank how do you stop the clay from drying out, do you try and get the whole thing covered in one day

Sounds like some real progress, can't wait to see the teeth.

Could you give us a recipe for your clay. I would like to make some sculpture items, much smaller though.

Still look'n for the zip drive that has my recipes for clay and wax. Will post the recipes as soon as I locate where they are. As for progress on the bear, here's a few pics. Two are of the bear with sealant applied and dried, the other two are of some clay being applied and a shot of the rough sculpt teeth and tongue. I used what I had of the clay I made for beefing up areas that needed a bit more body mass, then brushed on the new stuff my investor bought for me to use.

Mike, the clay I use for sculpting is oil based clay. It won't dry out... EVER. Handle it a few minutes let'n body heat being absorbed and the stuff softens up nicely and can be stretched and smoothed by finger pressure. Let it sit and cool and it stiffens up. The cooler it gets the harder it gets. Apply a blow drier to it and it'll soften back up for any necessary alterations.

Tomorrow I should be able to get the entire bear covered with clay plus get the ears put on and maybe some claws. Slowly but surely it's get'n there. :-)
