Makking patterns for a steam engine
Re: Makking patterns for a steam engine
Well i havent managed to get much done the past few days. I did buy the water putty and glue on the flange and drafted it and added a radius using the putty but not much more other than gluing up some scraps for the next pattern. Hopefully next week is a better one.
Re: Makking patterns for a steam engine
Finally got some time in on the pattern, except for a little finnessing and paint, this pattern is done!!

moving right along to the next pattern, not 100% happy with this one, might re do it....

What wood are you working with there David? Looks like it might be maple though I am no woodman, just a hillbilly.
Is it the parting line that you were not pleased with on this? Looks pretty good from what I can see.
Clocks ticking.... hehe

Re: Makking patterns for a steam engine
I have been making the patterns from #1 white pine. I keep getting chip out in some areas that I have to go back and fill in, also when milling across the end grain it machines rough. Maple machines much nicer and has a way better finish. I did some touh up on the pattern with a dremel tool, its good enough now...
Re: Makking patterns for a steam engine
Looked like a clean cut on the end grain is why I thought you were using a hard wood. Really nice for pine.

And a little bit of paint makes it look a whole lot better...
