Cincinnati Shaper
Re: Cincinnati Shaper
SVSeeker, that would be cool. His shop looks great and I like the things he's putting together. A dive buddy and I built a 2 man wet sub back in the 70's. It was fun and worked but wasn't very practical. Especially for central Ohio. I wonder where it is now?? I could use the batteries and motor for some other projects. I had plans for underwater cameras and ROV's but life got in the way.
Re: Cincinnati Shaper
Jammer; Doug/SVSeeker doesn't have a very big shop, actually his CNC Router takes up good part of what could be work space but for what he does it fits him. I ran into him over on AA when he was looking for help with the furnace that he built to cast the prop blades for the sail boat and I've helped him out from time to time ever since, HE's one nice guy.
The ROV is a project that he's trying to put together for a scientific team in the Black Sea, its about 4 inches in outside diameter and will end up between 8 and 10 feet long. He'd getting pretty close to doing open water trials, big problem is that there isn't any water deep enough to do any at depth testing on it.
Started cutting parts for the Router last night. People will say that I'm going backwards but I think it will be easier to make things fit by working backwards from the spindle motor to the frame. We'll see.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
Yea, I have some pictures somewhere. They are black and white, I had my own photo lab at the time and processed some of my own stuff. Mostly to get photos to local paper, I was a siren chaser. I took pictures of a house fire, developed them and had them to the paper before the firemen were finished cleaning up.
Re: Cincinnati Shaper
started wasting aluminum flat bar today making parts for the Z Axis photos later this evening, right now shop monster says he's hungry

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
got bored so I grabbed the camera and took a photo for you guys. here's a shot of what I got done on the Z Axis today. have to go to town tomorrow and see if I can find a 12 MM reamer, or something that will work.
I have the rails and bearings that I plan on using for the Z so I might as well get the holes drilled and reamed, hopefully I will get the Rail that I have ordered for the Y Axis tomorrow, bearings are going to take a little longer as they are coming from China.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
well I took the plunge last night and ordered the ball screws for this, so now I don't have any reason for not having a cnc router, or I should say now I need to get off my lazy ass and build the thing.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
fired up the furnace today and melted some cast iron for a short pour on one of the parts that I still need to make for the shaper, really nice surface finish on it but the mold didn't fill all the way, Justin down by Houston sent me some Sea Coal dust and I dusted the pattern with it to see if it would help with the finish that I was getting last year. I'm also using new sand that I mixed up with a little bit courser sand to help the molds vent. weather permits I'll try again in the morning, wasn't able to get any oil to the nozzle today due to the damn stuff being too thick from it being cold so I filled the tank an will heat before firing the burner again, wanted to try a pump that I had which I could stick in the bucket, but with cold thick oil its a no go.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
I fired up the old furnace again today this time running on a mixture of used motor oil and diesel, and propane, the part that I poured is the same part that I chased around for I don't know how long last year trying to get a decent cast iron part that I could machine. I think I got it today. I cleaned the casting up with a grinder but was able to use a file to pretty it up a little and had no problems filing the casting. Stuck it in the mill and faced off one side of the ring so that I can clamp it down on the mill table to face off the mounting end which is where all the measurements need to be indexed from.
will add a couple more photos later.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
Looks great, did it machine well, do you think? Have you changed the alloys you add to the melt?
