Are you melting 25 lbs at once or in a couple small pours?
Cincinnati Shaper
Re: Cincinnati Shaper
I use my mortar pestle a lot Dave, it's great for rocks and stuff that may break my ceramic one. Thanks! I had lost it in the move and then it resurfaced.. Yea!

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
was shooting for 25 pounds in one melt, but the foundry gods didn't see it that way and I ended up melting about 20 pounds before having to pour. I added 2.5 oz of Silicon plus a quarter of an E108 Inoculant pill to the melt just after skimming.
I would of made the 25 LB mark but problems with the oil not flowing foiled the attempt, only used about 2.5 inches of oil in just over and hour melt time, had to jack the propane feed up to about 15 psi and at that I barely cleaned the crucible before the melt turned to stiff to pour. I should of used 5 to 6 inches of oil out of the tank in the amount of time I fired the burner. weight of propane used was 14.5 pounds by my bathroom scale. the o-ring that was in the burner had been installed Wednesday morning so not sure if I nicked it when I put it in or if maybe something in the oil casued a problem.
From the splashes on top of the molds that I was able to snap the iron is nice and gray and one piece I was able to cut with a dull hacksaw so hoping the two parts (clamp handle, and Ratchet pawl) turn out to be machineable.
Photos of the broken bits Mold temp 30 to 45 minutes after pouring. Should have video on here this evening waiting till after shakeout to edit it.

A couple of photos of the clamp handle after shake out.
the handle The gating I notched it with a hacksaw so that it would break off without snapping into the part, note how nice and gray the iron is. Hoping that this is the last of this handle that I have to pour really getting tired of making the same part over and over again.

Don't quote me but I've heard that the pestle works great for breaking up ice in the ice bin of the fridge.Jammer wrote:I use my mortar pestle a lot Dave, it's great for rocks and stuff that may break my ceramic one. Thanks! I had lost it in the move and then it resurfaced.. Yea!

got the clamp handle cleaned up the two sides of the boss milled off and the hole drilled and tapped, which was a bi$%ch with a tap that had a bunch of chipped teeth.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
here's the shot of the handle installed on the shaper.
a shot of what will be the next part that needs to be made, this needs a handwheel with a depressed center, I have a photo of a shaper that shows the style wheel that should be on here.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
Last year while trying to melt and pour useable cast iron I casted the Backgear Shifter handle in Cast Iron but never got around to drilling it to fit the 7/8" shaft it goes on, anyway while I was digging around today in the tool box I found the handle and was able to get it secured in the mill and bored a .872 hole in it with no problems, just need to open it up 1 or 2 thousands and find a tapered pin reamer and pin and I will be done with that part of the Shaper.
Will add photo later today

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
ok finally got around to the downloading the snaps off the camera
First up is the clamp handle installed on the shaper.
Second is the new cast iron High Low Shifter handle, have it drilled and ready to be reamed to .875.
Third is of the pointer on the ram which indicates the length of stroke. this part is brass and from the looks of it was bent at sometime when the shaper was probably turned over on its side, I think is why there has been so many busted broken items on it.
Forth photo is of the new Ratchet Pawl , I chucked it up in a three jaw chuck on my 8 inch lathe and faced off the first side that the gear rides against so I can flip it over and bore the recess on the other side.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
You may be able to anneal the pointer and bend it back. I've read some things about brass forging but never tried it.
Re: Cincinnati Shaper
I'm thinking its red brass, and would rather have it made from the bronze that I made the crank handle out of as its been in the weather for almost year an still has its color.
if you look at the point just below the bottom left of the of the right hand screw you will see a crack in it, hard to see in the shadow.
I'm thinking make a pattern out of some homemade machineable wax flat then put the radius on the edge's, curve the pattern, mold it up cope it down on the back side the pour it
The scale also have cracked tab on it. Maybe I could talk Rasper into doing it or giving so pointers on what/how to do the scale will post a photo later today.
