Cincinnati Shaper
Re: Cincinnati Shaper
8 sided Octagon makes for smaller flats that have to be filed down smooth cause mills leave marksJammer wrote:I love the hex barrel.
here's some photos
after looking at the cost of sand paper I figure if I shorten the barrel to around 5 inches I can save a butt load of money and shorten the build time to about 1 month instead of half a year for all the sanding that long barrel will require.

Ok just joking who wants to shoot something with that short of a barrel chamber in something like a 45/120 anyway.
So new photos of work so far.
The boss in his office, you can tell he's working cause he's been cleaning his paws on my grease rag.

The better photo of the pipe and receiver laid out on the tailgate, damn things too long to get a decent close up

Marks left from the mill table being .5 inches too short

Marks removed

Work on the finger lever narrowing it down some

Awesome work!! I'm drool'n here 'cause I purely LOVE them light artillery pieces from back in the old day. Helluva thumper you're build'n there. I'm envious.
Re: Cincinnati Shaper
Thanks for the compliment Frank, I'd be working on it now but the boss got out from under his grease rag long enough to make me put the files down and feed him and catch up on the social live a bit.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
I did some more file work on the barrel today, and worked on the sear so that it engages the hammer like it should (I think) won't know for sure until the main spring is in place to put pressure on the two parts.
had some fun drilling the hole for the sear pin last night when it decided to locate its self in the edge of he slot for the sear spring as you can see in this not so very clear photo the two shiny spots are were the drill came thru the very edge of the slot. The sides of the slot couldn't of been and 1/8 of and inch higher, anyway its on the inside so only people that will know is me and

The sear pinned in place had to do a ton of filing on it and the hammer to get them to work together, now just have to wait until the spring is in place. Sear spring is working ok anyway it hasn't broken yet which is saying a lot since I made it from a hunk of trailer spring off a car hauler trailer.

then there is the out of focus shot of me sanding on the finger lever. Damn but you would think a 1000 dollar camera would take a better photo then that, hell it should at least focus its self.

I always loved octagonal barrels.
45/100? What will you do for brass? I know you can, or could, buy 45/70 and 45/90 brass, but 45/100?

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
got in some time with the mill and the breach block last night, firing pin hole has to wait till barrels screwed into the receiver so I can slide a bushing with a small transfer punch in it to make the center.

Boss has been on my butt all day about not sanding fast enough.

and you guessed it more sanding

got in a little something besides damn sandpaper today
barrel and receiver screwed together

and a long shot of the pair, looking more like a rifle now instead of a pile of bits and pieces
