did some doodling the last couple of days and tonight we cut out another piece of wood I think this one will work I put enough meat into it in the places that it needs it so I can cut it to fit as I whittle on it.



I know it looks a little chunky, but I'm not a designer of stocks, but I think it will clean up pretty nice and get it to fit my long arms.

headache finally let up so I decided to work on the stock some more, this joint really has to be done before anything else so one little chip at a time I'm getting it done.

Painted the receiver with some water based layout marker and tap the stock into place then take a wood chisel and shave off the marked places hoping for full contact.

Anyway here's a shot of each side, I still have a ways to go before the joint is done, it can't be seen in the photos but I let the bottom tang into the stock last night and now not only have to get full contact in the joint ( the shape of the joint causes the recoil to tighten the joint up when the rifle is fired) but also have to get the Lower Tang Screw holes to line up. You can just barely see the misalignment in the holes in the first photo.

not quite whittling it but close,
the extent of my wood working tools is
1 cheap 5 piece set of wood carving gouges
some wood chisels
1 spoke shave, need one of the really small ones that will do real tight curves but don't have one.
1 3 inch plane
1 6 inch buck plane
A handful of files
some sandpaper
And a belt sander that belongs to a buddy that I've had borrowed for a couple years now
and a couple of scrapers that I've made, along with a gouge that I made today if I can get it sharp.

I think that covers all the wood tools.

todays progress
not much going on today, been working on getting the butt plate to fit so I don't remove too much from the shoulder end of the butt stock when I start working on it with the wood plane

So first up you paint the back side of the butt plate with something (I'm using a water soluble marking die) and stick it on the end of the stock so the stock looks something like this


Then you take a razor sharp chisel and shave off all the blue spots until you get the butt plate so it fits something like this


With no gaps around the edge. I don't know who named the point on the top end of the thing a widow's peek, but with all the hassle it is to inlet the damn thing in to the wood I'm think it should be named a witches beak.

Anyway not a lot but we did get something done on the build today.

Jerry here's a shot that shows about 1.3 of my wood working tools



need to find or make me a really small draw knife so I can work the curves on the chime my spoke shave won't fit in, also need to rework the gouge that I made yesterday so its rounder and has more taper in it.

I need a couple small planes and a smaller draw knife. I've got a chunk of walnut from the woods where I grew up. I've hauled it around for over 30 years and it had been cut 30 years before that so it should be well seasoned.
I forget what I was going to make out of it. ??
