its been a couple days since I posted anything in here, so figured I better catch it up.

Still working on trying to learn how to checker the stock and forearm of the rifle. here's a shot of the some of my latest attempts.
Image

Still screwing up with the lines wanting to run crooked, but that may be from me not laying them out correctly, I've been trying to run a bunch of lines one direction then come back and start the other direction. Was scolded by my mentor to not do that, instead to lay down 5 or 6 lines then do the other side. So we'll see if that helps.

I also made a stand to hold the barrel in for bluing, still have a little it of finish sanding to do to it then its going to get blued. maybe next week after I receive the wire wheel I ordered to brush (proper term Carding) the rush off after boiling the barrel. But first I need to make a pan long enough to hold a 30 inch barrel.

For the pan I have a section of 6 inch square tube that is 18 inches long that I plan to split length wise, then butt weld together and plate the ends so I can put it on the cook stove on the two front burners. Hope to get the tube split today at my buddies shop with his plasma cutter.

Anyway that's whats been going on, besides the temp dropping like a rock yesterday from 55 down to around 28 when I went to bed last night.

Almost forgot, I out in some time on the big blade, did some sanding on the handles, I used it the other day after getting the resemblance of an edge on it to slice up some taters with, I like it, the taper on the blade needs to be a lot longer to make a good slicer/dicer with, but for heavy skinning and all around camp chores I think it would work pretty good. The one without any scales I have them made, still is in need of sharpening man did that blade get hard when I heat treated it.

Dave, you should take a look at a video at www.deepwoodsventures.com click on knives then down the left hand side click on how our knives are made & that will bring up the video. Big knives, small knives doesn't matter the principle is the same. Cheers Trev.

Trev, your absolutely correct there all made the same, I'll keep in mind to watch the video, biggest problems I have is getting off my arse and doing it to learn what I need to know to make better knife's, but I'm not trying to make a living at it just break the boredom that resides here since I got laid off from the job that I had.

other thing is that a guy just has to find what works for him. Plus I need to get off my arse and finish the belt grinder that I'm trying to put together.

well its back to sanding on the barrel, just to break the boredom, the action will be case hardened this weekend, hoping the colors pop on it like they do sometimes. Other then a brush I have everything I need to blue the barrel other then a bucketful of sanding on the barrel which should be done by the time the brush arrives.

I made this knock together cradle to hold the barrel in while sanding on it and during the bluing process.

belt sander was powered up yesterday, runs fine, but I think it will need a faster motor or a shaft added with some cone pulleys so that I can get the belt speed up to around 3500 rpm.

How fast does that motor turn?

As an aside: I am always on the lookout for motors. When I am in the USA I check my local Craig's list often and manage to pick up some for ten dollars. Another good source of 1/2 or 3/4 horse 3450 RPM motors is old hot tubs.

its a 2 hp 3 phase 1750 rpm motor. for what I put it on I need a TEFC motor to keep the grit out. first thing is to get a decent belt on it and see how it works, then go from there.

That's some serious power.

If you need more speed a 3450 RPM Craig's List or garage sale motor will give it to you for little money. You can consider them disposable. As I said, i buy them for ten dollars.

I always had the itch to make knives—since i was about 10 years old—but there has always been too much other stuff to make as well. There are just not enough hours in a day to make it all.

3 phase motors aren't as easy to find around here as you can get them for, and single phase motors in the 2 to 3 hp range are even scarcer. This one will probably work just find, if I need to I'll hook it up to a VFD and jack the hertz up to 120 and run it twice as fast when I need to use it.

been working on bluing the barrel most of the day, here's a really bad photo of it being boiled to turn the iron oxide rust to ferric oxide which is what causes the blue black color to magically appear.

It looks good. Is it as good as it looks in the photographs?

I must say I love that rifle. I have shot a .45-70 a number of times—the old Army rifle. I like those old big caliber rifles. I grew up around guns. My father and I hunted together. Four of his brothers had big tobacco farms in Virginia with plenty of game on them.

Do you really need 2 HP to run a narrow belt?

Up in California, where my other shop is, they sell 3 phase motors for almost nothing. No one can use them. Mostly for the weight of the copper I guess.

I found this almost new 2 HP single phase motor on Craig's List for 100 dollars. It's a Dayton.
