they could, If you smoked the mold up so the brass wouldn't stick to the cast iron, heck I know were there are a bunch of ingot molds for cast iron that are cast iron, the mold will usually cool off whats poured into it before it does any damage to the mold.

So when you going to hitch up the suspenders and melt some iron to pour into this mold that's been in hiding on your front porch acting as a door stop.

You know they say the best place to hide is in plane sight.

I almost fired up my furnace today, have a small flask pattern I been thinking real hard about pouring a couple in cast iron.

How come you people get to find things on your porch ;) no one ever leaves anything at my front door. I will admit tho, over the years somethings have just turned up in my shed

Doesn't happen very often here but its appreciated when it does.

I know about that stuff showing up in the shed, used to happen to me also when I was married, don't know where it came from but its not leaving.

Yes I agree Dave. I did notify the minister for war, peace, finances and all things neat tidy and clean in the house ;) that the mill was coming, it was sorta too big to sit quietly in a corner looking totally inconspicuous

Here's the mold I got. Looks like it will take about 4 pounds of Brass to fill it.

I'd smoke it up and give it a pour try in in aluminum first. put a bunch of clamps on it to keep the back plate from bowing out

I thought I might try Lead first, quick and easy to melt.
It's about 155mm tall.

make it out of aluminum and then you have a pattern for casting it in cast iron which as a door stop would be a real toe breaker.

I started on a new project today that will probably take me up through Fall if not longer. If I can get the castings that I was promised, which is still up in the air. It will be a couple of weeks yet before I can talk to the guy that has them.

to bring this back over here to my whatever you want to call it thread.

I dragged out a hunk of the wax that Jerry sent me and it cuts pretty good with a sureform plane/file but when trying to carve it with a knife or chisel instead of curls it breaks up and what your carving off shatters.

SO, as Richard suggested I'm going to go get some Vaseline and melt up some of the wax then stir in the Vaseline and see if I can get something that's a little softer to work with, nothing else I can always remelt it with some of the stuff that I've not done any thing with. I melted most of what was sent to me to get rid of the trash and crud/mold that was on it.

will post up some photos of whatever mess I make this afternoon.
