don't know about that, the guy that sent me the file for the slotter showed some of the photos he took of the build he first tired it in Cast Iron which looked like swiss cheese when he cut into it. the bronze one he did came out ok.

I'm working on some drawings for my version when I get a little further along with them I'll post and image, for as I can see if there is enough meat in the base and a large enough sprue and gate it should fill ok with out a lot of shrinkage.

been working on the computer with solidworks trying to draw up a part for my lathe, not that I really need the part, or a new project but this came along and I decided why not. So I been burning up the computer screen getting it all dirty with scribbles and eraser marks to draw up this part.

Its the base of a slotter attachment for cutting slots and keyways on a lathe.

I figured why not it would make a good exercise in working with the cad program that I have, if I could get it drawn up and I could get the router up and running I could cut the two halves with it, and it would make a decent casting, Plus it would be something different to cast then the ingot mold I been piddling around with.

Richard aka Rasper was asking the other day if I was still working on the Rolling Block, which I had slowed way down on due to the weather being hotter then the gates of hell and a few other places.

But yes I'm still working on it from time to time, I've actually been waiting on a gunsmithing class to start back up this fall which I plan to take and do bulk of the work there on their machines which are better then the stuff I have.

For those that have sorta followed along on my quest for something to keep idle hands busy I appreciate everyone that stops by and takes a look.

So this is related to the project at hand I shortened the barrel blank today from 35" down to 31.5 which will end up at 30 when all the machine work is done. I still have about 4 hours on a milling machine to cut the round barrel down to and Octagon which is the profile that I want, then it can be threaded and fitted to the receiver.

For those that have been wondering about caliber its a .50 caliber single shot black powder rifle.

Here's a photo of three shells
IMG_20150901_160003.jpg
The shell on the left is a 40 grain 22 WMR which fits the last rifle that I built modeled after a Remington Model 6.

The middle shell if a 405 grain 45/70 round that fits the Winchester Highwall that I put together a while back.

The one on the right is a 700 grain 50/90 for the rifle that I am working on now. this one even in a heavy rifle you will wake you up.

Anyway that's if for today, now I can get back to trying to figure out how to draw a circle with SolidWorks.

I looked at a U-Tube video of some guys shooting a Sharps .50-90 rifle. The first shooter lasted three rounds. He was no lightweight either.

pretty stupid to shoot like that with the wind blowing about 25 miles and hour, and that's about as unsupported as you can get the way they were shooting, might as well of stood up.

doesn't say what weight slugs they were shooting.

still playing with solidworks, been trying to get this drawn up so a guy that I know can do the 3D printer thing with it.
burner transition for small burner.JPG
I have a small squirrel cage blower that was given to me that I want to use for a LP burner, problem is it has a square outlet, so the part I drew up and hope to get printed as a pattern goes from square to round.

Anyway its been fun working with the program. good time killer for those nights that the shop monster won't let me sleep

I've been working with a friend in Las Vegas on some 3D patterns, anyway one pattern for sure. I did the drawings and he did the printing here's a couple of shots of where he's at with the printing

Finished 1st Half-2.jpg
he still has a couple small parts to print which will make the core print for the round section on whats the top of the casting which will be bored out to take a 3/4" sliding ram.
