still playing with the toys, fired back up today melting close to 20 pounds of Cast Iron in and hour, used 5 inches of oil out of my 10 inch diameter tank in 1 hour gravity feed to the siphon nozzle.

here's a clip of the preheat

here's the video of the pour, you will notice that the rod that I used to stir in the Silicon had a bunch of buildup on it when I stuck it in the furnace, the melt was hot enough that all of the buildup melted off and there was only a very small amount on the rod at the top of what had been in the actual molten metal.

Todays melt was approximately 17 pounds before skimming the slag off, it was mostly had white iron that I had poured previously but was unable to use due to not being able to machine the parts. Todays parts which comprised of a backing plate and a square block were some of the nicest Cast Iron that I've machined. The only Additives that were added to the melt was some Silicon and part of a E-103 Inotab which is suppose to help the machinability of the Iron, I won the Inotabs on EBay.

put the parts in the machines and did some cutting on them, the iron cut beautifully like machining butter. Will grab a quick video of the part that I have in the lathe and post it up here.

I also have some stills that I need to get off the camera so I can show you guys what I poured yesterday.

Here's a couple photo's of yesterdays pour,

First is of the pour right out of the sand

Second is of the sprue which I broke in half to check and see if the iron was white.

Third is of the inside of the crucible now how much Iron was left after pouring out what wasn't put into the mold. I've always had problems with not being able to get the crucible cleaned out.

from what experience I've had with bronze it leaves all crucible's nasty dirty, Iron from the looks of it if you get it hot and I mean hot enough to pour like water it will empty out nice and clean, believe me I've had some pretty dirty crucible's with iron from it not being hot enough to even scrape it out.

I'm trying to log the melts, nd keep track of how many times I melt in this crucible, it was a brand new A10 Silicon Carbide that I purchased last fall when the other one started looking pretty ragged.

if everything goes as planned this morning I will pour some more cast iron molds that I've rammed up over the last couple of days, I plan on melting 25 pounds of Cast Iron.

One of the molds is to replace a handle that I casted last fall out of aluminum, another is for the ratchet pawl which needs to be redone as the one on the shaper now I was barely able to machine it because of it being chilled. The other two molds are for a mortar and pestal that I pour from time to time which I give away, they work great for crushing up lalrge chunks of FeSi, gold bearing ore pieces for assay and cracking walnuts in.

Hopefully I'll have some photos and video to post later today.
