I'm thinking its slag that was the middle of the gate from the riser to the part. that was as close a picture as I could get.
the welding rod was throwed in right at the end of the melt, and the burner was shut off pretty quick after it was added. Metal was some of the better Iron that I've melted this year. mostly it was iron that I had already melted at some point in time. with one chunk of a bearing housing that I throwed in.
Oh yea almost forgot I left it in the sand for like and hour and a half before pulling it, the gating was cut off with a hacksaw.
I could of used the part but that wouldn't of solved the problems that I've been having, so I cut that chunk out to see what was in it, that part also was cut out with a hacksaw.
Jammer if you have any thoughts please post them. I've been doing a bunch of reading in the Cast Metals book, ok not a bunch but what there is on Gray Iron which isn't a lot. the copper seems to really help. The silicon that I throwed in was the 99.5 stuff from MM, hoping to melt and pour again on monday when I have some help. will use the FerroSil, will try to keep things the same except for the change in Silicon to see what happens.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
Information on Cast Iron must be corporate secrets. They throw out a couple tidbits but no numbers or real solid info. More on Ductile Iron but that's a whole different animal. A fellow was helping me a lot to learn about ductile and he said he would send me some inoculant, but then he kind of disappeared. I gave him some info on one of our testing machines, I guess he got what he wanted and left me hanging. I feel so used..
Re: Cincinnati Shaper
I've had people that left me with the same feeling,
if the weather holds I hope to repour the same melt, I wrote the stuff down on the side of the muller, you might say its wrote in chalk instead od chisled in stone.
Anyway the welding rod is still in the curcible and if I pour I'll have some help to maybe hold the slag back I try to skim it off but its not like spooning the stuff off of aluminum. Just have to hope mother nature holds good.
And your right there isn't really a lot out there on melting Cast Iron at home. I know one guy that was having a lot of success with iron but haven't talked to him in a spell, plus I don't know him all that good.
I think I'm going to go get a back of courser sand and mix some in with what I been using the stuffs starting to get full of fine from parting dust and just general handling and with the cast iron I can stand to be a little courser so the castings don't look so slick. have to see what happens tomorrow.
Hope you had a good Thanksgiving.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
didn't do any iron work today, was too wet this morning, I did this afternoon make me a plate to mount a spin on oil filter on so I can filter my burner oil. and maybe use it to supply the nozzle with at a flow rate greater then the syphon nozzle will pull it. Still have to make a bolt that needs to be drilled and tapped for a pipe fitting.

Then the shop monster wanted pie, so I made him a sweet tater pie.

got in a little more time on the filter plate after making the pie for the shop monster, thinking now all I need is a pump which I have and some way to turn it which I plan on using a 1/2 inch drill I have for the moment.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
We have been eating a lot of Sweet Potato pie this fall, seemed to be a bumper crop in the area. Everyone is selling them. The wife got tired of making pie crust so she been making casseroles instead. I'm going to gain a lot of weight.
Re: Cincinnati Shaper
next pie will be pumkin, but right now I have a pot of cast iron on to boil which is taking all my pie making time, who knows what will come out of the pot.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
well the pour didn't turn out so good today, I had two gates into the mold cavity and one of them froze which caused the problem that you see in the photo. metal seems from what little I've worked on it to be soft, it was left in the sand for a couple of hours after being poured (I had to go help a friend) anyway I had the same amount of melt in the crucible, used the same amount of Silicon, Copper, and the NiCast welding rod what was left in the crucible from the last melt.
Weathers suppose to turn to crap here so looks like I won't get to do any casting for a few day's. Do hope to get the filter plumbed in so I can filter my burner oil plus I may go ahead and hook it up so I can pump direct to the nozzle.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
weather sorta put the stops to outside activities today, so I went to town and got a few thing that I've been needing like a bag of 50-70 sand to coarsen up my molding sand, and ordered up some tooling of the lathe. I've been needing a 1" boring bar that will take inserts, wish I had some way to hold a 1.250 for the stiffness that it would provide.
hope that this cold crap doesn't hang around long.
I also got the glass stuff ordered today for the drip oilers, so soon as it arrives I can finish up that little project. I also ordered a piece of .5 inch sight glass tubing to fill out the order so I could make the minimum order which I will install on my oil tank that I use for my burner fuel.

what the shop monster and his coffee buddies left me of the pie I made

and what my back yard looks like, so no casting for a couple days.
