here's the video of the pour that I did yesterday, sorry but I forgot to turn the camera on when I started removing the slag and getting ready to pull and pour the molten Cast Iron.

took this photo today while trying to figure out how to temper flat springs for the 1885, its and old file that I was heating up in the first furnace/forge that I made about 4 or 5 years ago.

Looks good, I want to try to heat some metal up but I need something to pound it on. Passed up an anvil last week, I may go back and try to buy it if it's still there.
Are you able to heat up a large enough area? What are you going to do to make that into a spring? I would think the carbon might be a little high and may be brittle.

may make a flint striker out of it, other wise it was just something to heat up and beat on, I've been making springs for the 1885 out of an old leaf spring off of a trailer.

I needed something small to do the heat treat in so dragged out the first forge/furnace out of the shed and rigged up a burner for it.

Photos were just a natural part of the process and I really like this one and thought I would share it.

if you have a chance to buy a decent anvil at a decent price I'd jump on it.

got in some more work on the 1885 that I've been working on the last few weeks, and seeing as how I finally found the charger for my canon camera (little Kodak digital's getting a bad case of I don't want to focus right now).

Anyway here's a couple photo's of what I managed to get done yesterday after the receiver was threaded with help from a friend.

Threaded receiver

Hole drilled and pin in place. Note the odd shaped piece that's screwed into the receiver, I almost lost it when I snapped a number 55 drill bit off in the hole when I went to pilot drill it, bit grabbed just as it started to break thru. Was able to get it out by using a .062" 4 flute carbide endmill to cut it out.

Going to start on barrel later today by sawing 5 inches off of it to make it 30 inches long. Have to first get the Steady Rest setup on the lathe to center the barrel with, my spindle's too small to fit the barrel thru it and use a spider on the backside to line it up with.

No I bought the barrel, too much work involved that I know nothing about to make one.

The one I bought has been cut down to 30 inches in length and will be profiled into and Octagon shape with a slight taper to the barrel,

heres a shot of it in the lathe where I turned the end to fit into a spin indexer

I think I remember your saying that this is a 45/70. When I was in high school a friend and I were avid shooters. And we had access to his father's sizable gun collection, as well as our own smaller collections. One of his father's guns was a 45/70, which we used to shoot sometimes. We had reloading dies for 30-30, 30-06, 38-40, 38 special, and 12 ga. shotgun. (We shot a lot of skeet.)

And then later my wife's father was a game warden in Virginia. He had a ton of guns, almost all of which he found in the woods. When he would come upon some hunters who didn't have a hunting license, most of them would throw their guns in the brush rather than face a pretty stiff fine. After they left he walked around and found the guns and took them home with him.
