Having the grain follow the perimeter will also make turning on the lathe much better than alternating cross and with grain.

Spot on on the thickness, too! I will turn this down to somewhere between .375" - .25". At some point stability and strength become a factor.

This is something you can work with by turning the inside first. I am sure there is some kind of liner you could apply, fiberglass, carbon fiber? Then you could take the outside down to almost nothing and still have structural integrity, I suppose people would just think it was a veneer applique then though and it take away from the charm of being curved pieces.
