Titanic Anchor

Post by bunyip »

Just watched 1 segment of a series on SBS TV about 4 people with different skills with the help from the appropriate people cast an exact replica of the Titanic's bow anchor in the very foundry in England that cast the original. The shank was a 5 ton billet of steel 6metres (20 ft) long & hydraulic shaped (original hammered). The flukes, 11 tons, were cast in steel heated to 1800 deg C. The pattern was of wood with 1 fluke shaped manually by hand tools & the other 1 by CNC .This pattern was then used to make an enormous sand mould & then cast & broken out 48 hours later.Once assembled it was set up permanately in the city of manufacture, not so much as a memorial to Titanic but as a tribute to those who made the original 100 years ago.
