Let's try this one full size. This is a ladle on the rebuild stand after the steel has been cast. the gate is checked and then it goes back to the furnace to get another fill up.

On the rice hulls... I believe that the Steel is so hot and the hulls are burnt right at the Steel, there is little Oxygen left so the stuff on top just sits there. We throw the temp probe tube on top and it will eventually burn up, just a cardboard tube, it takes a while for it to turn to ash. The rice hulls are also high in Silica which may have something to do with it.
In other words... I'm not real sure..?? :P  :?

your welcome F.C., what part of Alaska are you in, hopefully not Anchorage, never could stand that place when I was stationed up there, but then I was up north at Delta Junction, boy has that place ever changed was back up there a couple years ago, poor little army base done went and cont some Congressional Funding and been turned into a missile base. the highway was a little bit better but the old paxson inn was sure run down. that was back right after they had the earthquake around 2002 or so.

You do the art work also or just the casting?.

Awesome piece of bronze!

I did several pieces of bronze art for that centennial project. I was a member of the National guard at the time so I could get resident tuition while attending college. Art was my major. One weekend doing drill duty I got this bright idea to present the whole notion to my commander. That, in turn, got me an audience with the post General. Next thing I knew I had talked them into giving me full time active duty pay for the next two years while i attended college and worked those art commissons after school and several weekends throughout that enlistment. Yes, I did the artwork (pattern) too. I also built the foundry using their equipment, their materials and resources. When the commission was done I went back to drill status. Two weeks later my enlistment ended. I got to take all my tooling I built home with me, too. I didn't make a wad of money but full time active duty pay doing nothing but school and artwork was a blast and a saving grace considering I had two babies to feed, and a wife to support at the time. My 3rd son was born shortly before my enlistment ended. Oh... I also designed the time capsule vault, as well.
