Oh like everyone else you'll find enough stuff that your not suppose to do to keep you busy. Read a book , cast a locomotive one piece at a time
or you could grab a paint brush, and head this way and put the finish on this damn thing that I got myself into cause I hate paint.

the important thing is to take care of the shoulder after the doc sticks a knife in it so you can get back to the toy's in the backyard.

Wife has told me in no uncertain terms, if I go and do the wrong thing or even think about working in my shop that I'll be in more shit that I can handle, my daughter would not be all that pleasant etherdallen wrote:Oh like everyone else you'll find enough stuff that your not suppose to do to keep you busy. My brother is doing the same thing, what the doc say's although his surgery wasn't anything close to what yours will be, with them joints you gotta be careful.
That's ok on the painting Mike I got it done enough that I think it will mold, and the only way to do that is to make a box and ram the thing up in some sand. But that won't be till this afternoon as I have a Doctors appointment this morning. Once I get it a flask made the next move will be to cast it, or I should say to see if I can cast it.
I'm not too sure of how I am going to have to gate this thing thou. if you have any thought's don't keep em to yourself cause I'm open to suggestions.

Re: Hospital
I've tried to post this twice but for some reason it never would post. You have to be careful during the first month (at least) to allow for your wounds to heal. After that, you seriously need to google what exercises are necessary (for each phase of recovery) to enable your shoulder to heal and strengthen as you recover. That first month of doing "nothing" will literally cause your arm to athropy to a point where it'll look like it's loose skin and bone. It's scary. And what's even worse is the amount of months it'll require to get it back to some resemblence of shape you used to have with it. Know this and know it well... it will NEVER recover 100% to what it was before the injury, nor before the surgery. I know many young bucks that have undergone this surgery (including myself) and we ALL attest to this fact. Joint surgery is the worst for full recovery. It will NEVER be quite the same. You will ALWAYS baby that arm and shoulder till you grow old and die. Can't be more blunt than that. But it's the truth. No matter how tough you think you are... it will not fully recover. So, don't push it. Or you could cause it further damage. It's taken myself and every friend I have that's had this surgury, a full year (at least) before the memory of the pain subsided and you begin to "think" it's back to some measure of fitness. Then, like a dumbass, you'll do something (like I did, after a year) that recalls every bit the memory of the pain that caused you to go to the doc to begin with. In time you will begin to understand and teach yourself to be "careful" with that shoulder from now on. I steadily work out to try and build back the strength I used to have in that arm. I also do physical labor to retrain my arm, shoulder, neck, etc., to accommodate the effort. EVERY TIME I do it, I have miserable sleep at night and it's not 'cause of the sore muscles from lack of exercise. It's JOINT related. Although my shoulder WILL take the work effort other parts of my body have been crying out in pain solely due their part in subliminally compensating for the shoulder's incapabilities... my neck (on the side of the shoulder that was operated on), for instance. It's been a full year, now, and I can stand in front of a mirror and visually see how my body is now lopsided because of the other muscles trying to support and assist in keeping that shoulder functional. My neck has lost a lot of range of motion towards the direction of the shoulder that was hurt. My wife, a massage therapist, is in shock how tense my muscles are in the neck, collar bone, and shoulder are (they're like taught guitar strings) from the tension of them steadily trying to keep me functional 'cause I REFUSE to give up and steadily keep doing hard labor chores I'm told I need to cut back on doing... till I heal. Thing is, it's been a frick'n year. Young bucks that had this done many years ago keep telling me they, too, had to learn to ease off and STILL DO. It's a life changing event, Mite. Still, I refuse to succumb to it. I will keep on keep'n on as I always see fit. I keep pray'n the day will come I'll be back to my old self again. But reality is... I'm 61 as of last week. It ain't gonna happen. Still... I'm as stubborn as they come. I intend to keep try'n. And each time I do, I end up spending three to four days recovering from the residual pains because of it. All I can say is I sincerely hope your case wasn't/isn't as bad as mine was. I sincerly hope your recovery goes much better and that your body is still resilliant enough to rebound from it all. Proper exercises, though, is critical. Mostly for the ability to achieve range of motion like you used to have. If you do not keep up with the exercises pertinent with the phase of recovery you're going through your shoulder will become stiff and resist further development. Even though I do what I can to accommodate the healing process with each exercise on a daily often multi times a day routine, I still can barely scratch my upposing underarm or wash my upper backside in a shower with that arm. Damn frustrating, it is. It's as though the damn shoulder has become rusty or the ligaments have been cut too short and reconnected. I'm thinking the latter may quite possibly be it. So, this is why I keep doing what I can to stretch those ligaments back to the length they once had. But in doing so, it's like causing myself a ligament strain each time. There has come a point where my mind is say'n STOP... ENUFF!! IT IS WHAT IT IS.... Still... I keep on try'n, but not so often like I did all last year. Guaranteed, you'll get yourself back to where you can grunt your foundry equipment but come the night you'll feel the reprocussions from it. Guaranteed....... And the worst of it for me is that every time i go out and ride my Harley I end up suffering on the way home from shoulder pain due the steady vibrations. I'll live with that, though... HAHAHA. Ain't give'n up my ride. NEVER!!
Best of luck to you and your recovery, Mite. Don't get hooked on them pills. They sure do great to remove the pain, but they don't do shit toward healing and recovery. Ya got to stay mobile and exercise often. Stretches with your arms high up against a wall press'n your body weight against it and force'n it to stretch those muscles and tendons do the most good. But the side to side lifts with weights is what wears ya down and causes the neck and other muscles misery to compensate for the shoulder not wanting to comply.
Good luck, my friend.
Cheers.

Re: Hospital
Sounds like it wasn't too bad Mike, not like a total joint replacement. Take it easy, read and hang around on the web. The time will go fast.
I wish I could find the guy who had the videos of his cannon. He was lobbing golf balls at feral cats that came out of the woods to eat the food he set out. It was pretty funny, someone probably complained and had it removed. There is a cat cannon game, kind of like angry birds.

@ Dave, if it was me casting that, I would try a runner about half way around and feed in two or three places and feed from the bottom, then see what I ended up with maybe somthing like what I did on the round sign

@ Frank, thanks for all that info mate. I went to physio yesterday and was told this could take 12 months or more to repair fully and not to do a damn thing with my arm tor the first 4 weeks at least and take things very easy for awhile after
@ Jammer, no mate not as bad as first thought, but its still going to take time to repair. Love to see the cannon you-tube clip
