Richard, that's the greatest most profound compliment I've ever received. Thank you. I have always considered myself an artist, mind, body & soul. Sculpture artist to be specific. But 3/4 of my life in this world had me convinced art would never pay the bills thus I had to WORK for a living... LOL. What I find apropos to your description of my character is that with each and every job I ever did in life, regardless the discipline, I always, first and foremost, expressed a measure of what I did for hire through some expression of art. It drove my employers NUTS!! My last employer, in fact, was at his wits end with me in how I wrote reports... "too much emotion in the words I chose to use", he kept hammering me over. At one point he asked me why I kept doing it knowing full well it'd piss him off and I told him... "I'm an artist... I don't see things, write, speak, nor even THINK the way you do... DEAL WITH IT or edit the damn reports and leave it at that and quit expecting me to change!!" Within three weeks after that I resigned and retired. It had been nine years since I did any artwork and I was mentally ready to explode. I figure I have a good 20 + years of good productivity in me to grunt these large public art projects out. And by gawd, I aim to do just that... even if I have to create solely for the purpose of getting it off my mind (regardless whether it's sold or not) and move on to something else. I have never been so at peace within myself than I've been the past few months. :-)

I don't know about extraordinary, I guess in a sense having some deep pocket step out of the woodwork to fund this bear entirely, plus offer to fund more projects once this bear's done, certainly could qualify. I tell ya, though, what I'd truly love to have happen is to hook up with some other artists I can work well with and as a team develop an art foundry right here that we can do our own commissions through (working for and with one another) and attract other artist's work, as well, to profit by. In the interim I have but one soul purpose in life and that's to start shake'n up the art world around this region. They're all nicely groomed, each identically mannered, as if they've been coached for decades in how to be "professional". HAHAHA.... Myself, I'm as subtle as a hand grenade. If the Mad Potter of Mississippi can get away with overt bazar behavior then I'm in good company, I figure. Rodin and I share similar background and internal torment. He was in his 50's when he defied all logic and quit the family business of engineering to pursue art. I've had about 40 years of supporting engineers, architects, environmentalists, and fabricators gathering data, crunch'n numbers and make'n designs. It's what I have in background no other artist typically would have which enables me to do what I do without aid or assistance from anyone else. It would be a delight, though, to pass on what I know to someone equally motivated as myself, and particularly if the individual happens to be feel'n the same setbacks I've had to deal with in life that kept me from creating art. If I could save a poor soul such as this I'd be "extraordinarily" HAPPY!! :-)

Here's today's sketch notes on what needs added to this bear's anatomy.

We saw these bears on a trip we took last week. They are concrete. There were a lot of the black bear, all painted different. The growling one was further down the road. I know yours will look much better than this one. :)

Well, its been a while since I've messed about with this bear of mine. I was work'n like a house afire there for a while then realized I'd gotten a bit ahead of myself and overlooked some critical details. Plus, cold weather set in about then, too, which limited quality time in the shop to effectively do anything worthwhile. It's hard to be creative and productive when your nose is constantly running, finger tips and toes constantly aching from the cold, etc. Basically, I closed up shop. Once a week I'd go out and stare at the bear a bit and cuss myself for not having insulated that shop nor installed the huge cast iron fireplace that's been sit'n in place draw'n dust the past year and a half. Hell, what am I say'n... even if I had installed it, without insulation and enclosing the interior with sheet rock any heat the stove could produce would rise to the roof cavity and roll out the roof vent and bird blocking along the eaves. Would just be a waste of firewood.

As of today.... Snow pack is pretty much gone. Mornings are still brisk and frosty, puddles have a layer of ice till mid afternoon, and there's a few piles of solid snow/ice pack in shady spots along the perimeters of the house and shop where snow melt slid off the metal roofs and compacted as they hit ground. No snow visible elsewhere around the property except where I plowed and compiled mounds of it getting the driveway and parking areas cleared of snow. Mid day throughout yesterday, for about 6 hrs was rather pleasant temperature wise. Not t-shirt conditions but sunny, no breeze. Got some yard work done, burnt some dead fall branches, and actually opened up the shop doors and spent a good while doing some spring cleaning and dusting of my shop interior. Extended weather report suggests we might be into the beginnings of spring... low to mid 50's as peak temps all week projected, with night time temps in the upper 30's. Rain, too, is expected off and on during the week which will add a high level of moisture to the air which means it'll be a few weeks, yet, before I can enjoy work'n in my shop without being suited up with a coat, hat and gloves. I'm not used to a wet cold environment. Alaska weather is most always a dry cold in the interior where I spent most of my time. We moved here because of the high plain dryness. This winter has been one of our wettest on record in this region. But it's soon to pass and the sun's soon to start drying things out nicely again. Looks like March before I'll be get'n jiggy-wid-it again on this bear sculpture. I expect I'll be casting it late summer, early fall at the latest.

On another note, I did spend time think'n hard on this bear to determine how to get the most out of this one sculpt effort. This is a conceptual idea I've had in mind to do as an additional sculpt off the bear mold once it's completed. In a sense, when the mold is created and wax duplicate is made of the anatomy I'd take a hot knife to the wax and fragment the body to appear (once cast and reassembled) similar to the sketch shown.
