well, I made a bit of progress on the checkering planes... I machined up the bottoms of them and the steel was really wierd, full of hard spots, and hard to work with properly. I had to machine it a few times because I kept screwing it up, and when I took it out of the vise, I realized that it was way too thin and the plane itself had moved in the vise and shifted somehow, which made one side thicker than theh other, throwing everything off, and ruining the whole plane. I realized after that that the planes were far too thin for the soles and I really didnt like it at all, so I took it back out to the forge and heated them back up and that melted the braze. I lifted the top up and the top/body and soles just fell off, and I brazed on a new bottom/sole that is much thicker, and is mild steel that should be much easier to machine up.
They're in the vinegar picklling tub right now, dissolving all of the scale off of them again, and getting them ready to redo the machining all over again. I wasnt 100% happy with them before, but I like them more now with that front toe on it, which I didnt have enough material to add to them last time. It also gives me something to grip onto to machine the insides also.
I also had another plane body forged out a while back, that never got converted to square ended box tubing, so I just stuck a piece of steel on it also while I was brazing up the other planes, lol. I have no idea what to do with it yet, but I'd probably just stick it in my pocket and use it wherever really I think as a block plane, lol. Ive been looking at ideas of different types of planes, but there isnt anything that I can find that I really need that I could use that one for, lol. I did think of using it as a toothing plane, but Ill have to see how the checkering planes work, since it'll be pretty much the same thing, but with a much lower blade angle, and a smooth bottom instead of a V grooved bottom.
So not much to report on that progress, went to step 7 or 8, and got put back to step 4 or 5, lol. Now just waiting on the scale to dissolve off of them so I can machine them up without the scale throwing stuff out of precision, or tearing up my cutters.
