messed around with the handcrank that I have been trying to get the bugs worked out of molding so that it pours like it should and the pattern will pull out of the sand without any tears.
So this afternoon I decided that since I was going to pour it that I would do it in cast iron, which would of been nice except that I didn't cut the runner from the sprue to the gating deep enough and it froze.
BUT I got it on video for the guy's that can't do any melting at the moment.

The parts look great as well. You'll be a wood worker before you know it....
Re: Cincinnati Shaper
I do have a lot of time on my hands what with not working, and you know what they say about idle hands being the devils workshop, so I try to keep mine busy, and besides that I've dropped a pound or three since the Heart Attach back in May.latzanimal wrote:You never miss a chance to rub it in, do ya?I'd be happy to turn it for you, but looks like you have more time than I do. Lots more. It'll be up and running. Not soon enough, but it will run....

My lathe is and old Enco 12X36 that if I can sell my bike I plan on getting a new one. but it was big enough to swing the pulley over the bed it cleared the prism on the back way by about 3/8" so I had to trim the gating off pretty close.
I must of forgot to mention that I flunked sand box five years in a row.latzanimal wrote:I'd have a talk with your editing department and the proofreader. They forgot how to spell September in the last video..
No I'll never be a woodworked don't have the space for the tools that it takes.latzanimal wrote:The parts look great as well. You'll be a wood worker before you know it....
this is hopefully what I want for putting on the tranny, by making it about half an inch wider then the original one I can make up for the offset in the alignment. and with flanges on it I shouldn't need to put any crown on it.

My old guy doesn't take over the project, he just says "Come on let's go sit down for a few minutes or hours, we can finish this tomorrow or next year."The old guy he shows up every now and then when I'm not looking and tries to take over whatever it is that I'm messing with.

I am so tired of being sick and tired. I'll get my butt in gear soon. Then it will be winter. I'm hoping it's really mild here so I can work on stuff and go fishing.
Looks great as usual Dave, I really want to get started on some cast iron pours. I've got a handle to do much like your crank.
Re: Cincinnati Shaper
well the old guy left me alone today and I finally beat the ghost of handcranks past butt and got one casted in Cast Iron today, its not perfect, a little bit of eroding of the sand where the metal flowed in to the cavity at, and the core slagged some but it can out just left a skin in the hole that will wear out over time, it fits the shafts which is what matters.
here's a shot right out of the sand

and one with it cleaned up a bit hanging on the shaper. the one on the vise is the aluminum one I did here a couple of days ago.
I know what you mean about the sick and tired feeling, just take care of your ticker so you can putter in the shop, it can get pretty cool where your at in the winter time it really just depends on the the winter same as here, last winter we had very little cold weather, this winter who knows it hasn't got here yet.
A word to the wise on dealing with Cast Iron specially by yourself is get you a swing arm with an electric winch or someone that will come help when you want to pour, nothing like jerking one of them crucibles out right in front of your lap and it white hot, makes you want to get rid of it real quick like.

There's my problem. Damn work gets in the way everytime... If only I could get paid to do what I want to do...dallen wrote:I do have a lot of time on my hands what with not working, and you know what they say about idle hands being the devils workshop, so I try to keep mine busy, and besides that I've dropped a pound or three since the Heart Attach back in May.
How are you going to make the pattern? Are you going to cut out the flanges on the lathe or cast it close to correct size?
