This is shrinkage. You have a nice big feeder there, but the gate between the feeder and the part is very small. The small gate froze before the part was solidified and when the part was cooling it sucked iron from the hottest piece. In this case it was the part next to the gate. Make this bigger and you will not have this problem in the next piece. You will have more cutting to do to remove the feeder, but you will have a nice part to grind and finish.

Brrrr! It's cold here this morning. I've been staying inside most of the time. Sun is out now, but won't get very warm today. Maybe 60 later in the week. :)

too cold to cast so I'm hanging close to the cookstove for warmth, I guess you could group this in with mold making though it is a lot easier to ram up then sand.

When was this, Dallen? What branch? What MOS? Sounds like Greely, Artillery perhaps? We lived in the bush, seemingly all winter... IN TENTS!!! I was stationed in Anchorage but our unit spent literally all winter in the field, I swear. Surprised I kept all my fingers and toes. There were many a time when the weather was INTENSE.
