finished up the part for the guys tractor today and delivered it and helped install it to make sure I had no leaks because the ram is hollow and full of fluid rod end seals with an O-ring. Started out with a hunk of 1018 cold roll that was cut off of a 2"X4" bar.

the black one is what I used as a pattern

Plus I received the bounce house blower that I had bought off of EBay

Hooked it up to a damper that I made when I was building coffee roasters and used some dryer vent hose to hook it up to the burner.

Will give it a try in a day or two and see what I can melt with it.

Those do look great Frank. Did you get moved yet? I can tell you, it's tough trying to get settled in a new place and setting the foundry back up. Everything else comes first.

Dave, that fitting looks like it came out really good, is it some kind of hydraulic part?

The bounce house blower is a brilliant idea. I am looking forward to hearing how well it works for you.
It also looks like you moved your furnace too.

Yes... The move is completed, I now officially live in southcentral Washington, but I work (still) in Alaska. Not sure how long I'll agree to make'n the rotation here and back, but for now, at least, it beats unemployment or work'n for minimum wage in that broke-ass community down south. I'm think'n maybe of stick'n it out (one month or so on, one month or so off) till I reach 64 then pull the plug and retire on SS and work my foundry under the table for additional income and heartfelt enjoyment. Have a lot of issues with the house in Washington which we found out is why it never sold over the past six years. We left it in pristine condition then due to renting it out (to avoid dual mortgage payments) the damn renters literally trashed the place and our realtor never told us about the damage. The idea was to move there, spruce the place up, list it for sale by owner, then sell it and push on to Missouri. However... both the wife and I agreed this last move was a miserable pain in the ass and we agreed, also, that if we move ever again it'll be with suitcases and paying to have the rest moved out of the property sale. However... we also agreed to seriously consider just dig'n back into them digs and make'n it work for our needs after we spruce it back up to our liking. All my wife's relatives live within a 200 mile radius from there... the only family I have left in Missouri is a few cousins and one old as dirt uncle. I also have a few cousins in Washington that's been more brothers to me than my own family all these years, so, we just might stay put in WA afterall. Besides... I built my dream shop there back in 2008 which I never got to use. It's on 5 acres, super quiet subdivision, beautiful weather, and close to familiar family and the convenience of modern malls for purchasing desires. Lots of commercial foundries exist in that area as well, both industrial and small scale. So, for now (at least) I'm committing on giving that place another try. It'll be much easier, though, once I retire and don't have to commute 3K miles each way to work. :D

got the new bounce house blower hooked up and blowing air into the furnace, had to make a new burner tube so the air stream didn't have any sharp square corners to turn. Fired it up today once the rain stopped, was able to burn about and inch of oil out of my fuel tank which is made from a piece of 10 inch pipe in about 20 minutes, hope to try and melt some cast iron in a day or two once my damn back straightens back up, have a pinched disk or nerve which has been giving me hell for a week now.

Also changed out the Driver card on the Y Axis of the router so that I now have the same cards on both the X and Y Axis which are a heck of a lot better then the ones that came with the kit that I bought. So hopefully in a few days I can try to cut some wood with it.

Will try to get some photos and video of things when I can, damn computers have been giving me about as much trouble as my back has.

I'm running mine with a 4 foot section of plastic dryer vent hose on it to connect it to the burner, hose is 4" diameter so I'm using a 3" to 2" PVC bell reducer to connect to the burner I figure that at .42 cents a foot I can go thru a lot of vent hose before having to find something more expensive.

us a piece of heavy card stock on the inlet as a damper turn on the blower and hold the card stock up there and it will stay in place till you turn the thing off. I had a damper that I had made for a coffee roaster that with a little work fit right into the housing.

Do try to hook up with out any sharp bends and corners which will restrict the air flow from the blower.

Dave,
What is the power of your new blower? In either hp or amps.

I am looking for a bigger blower for my large #30 furnace running a Lionel Brute. The 5 gallon shop vac I am using is not quite enough. I built a blower years ago from Gingery plans but it is not quite enough either.

Image

It turns at 3450 now. Maybe if i up the speed another notch.

the data tag on the bounce house blower that I won off of ebay say's its a six amp motor.

you can speed up the gingery blower, but I'm not going to say how much as I don't know how it was put together and fans when they come apart are not fun to be around. you could make one with wider blades which would give you more air,

Chastain has the numbers if you want I can scan those pages out of his furnace build book and post them for you.

I'm not going to say to change the way you burn oil, but you would probably get a lot better atomization of the oil which would give you a lot better burn by using a nozzle.

One problem I have with this new blower is that the burner port in my furnace was cast around a 2" pipe, which leaves me with a choke point in the air stream so I'm not getting all the air pressure that I should, basically even with the damper wide open, the amount of air out the end of the burner tube is only about half what the blower will actually push. so I have some thinking to do, even though it will probably melt iron. Thinking about a home made carbide hole saw to cut a bigger hole in the furnace wall for a 3 inch tube, I have some carbide inserts that I can silver solder onto a piece of 3.5" tube to make a hole saw with. But before I do that I've gotta get this damn back problem straightened out and see how much iron I can melt, I may leave it like it is.
