Cincinnati Shaper
Re: Cincinnati Shaper
well I got the ooh uh fixed that I made with filing the hole too big in the hammer, by making a new tumbler today.
Here's some photo's
first up is where I turned the axle part on the tumbler, using some .562 drill rod, lucked out and achieved a nice slip fit.

Second is of the part still to be parted off, but I've got the shoulder length right.

Third is with the hammer on the axle in the plate

And number 4 is the part what I remade.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
received my plinker barrel yesterday, so I can get my butt in gear and move on with that little project.
I've been messing around with Muzzle Loader Locks making some of the ones that I can get plans for, I'm wanting to build a .54/.58 caliber Plains Rifle this summer, so I've been dabbling in lock building as its the one complicated part on the rifle.
Here's one that I did.

Anyway I'm about ready for spring so I can get back out in the shed, and make some thing out of hot molten metal.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
been playing with the wood again, trying to learn how to do the checkering bit, received a hunk of curly maple from a friend sure like the way it cuts. Did this last night, and then ran a cleanup pass on it this morning,

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
The problem is, no one wants a curly Maple gun stock. Walnut seems to be the rule.
I know, Walnut is kind of stringy; Maple is more like hard cheese, very regular. The trouble isthat it's white.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
depends on how its stained, old timers used nitric acid and iron shavings to color it with. Grain in walnut is on par with oak having closed and open cell structure which makes it have hard and soft spots, but then you have curly walnut that is like curly maple (I can't afford either) that cuts and checkers nice cause the grain tight.Rasper wrote:The problem is, no one wants a curly Maple gun stock. If I lived in Oregon I'd use Curly Myrtle Burl if I could find some big enough, pretty wood, works nice. I made some grips for a PPS43 out of a small piece that I had.
Most people can't afford a Curly Maple gun stock, and your not going to find it on an over the counter gun.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
That checkering is really lookin good David, I used to have patience for doing things like that but seem to lost it somewhere along the line.
Shop monster looks like he was serious about that threat
15 day forecast for here is currently showing a nice warming trend, hoping this is the corner for spring so we can do a lot more outside. Just having the later days with DST this weekend is gonna help a ton with that extra hour in the evening and we are racking up 2 minutes a day as the sun tracks back our way so its all heading towards better.

I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints the sinners are much more fun...
