Man, a new roof is a thing of comfort. A home is only as good as its roof and that looks purdy David.

I built a coop this year with a metal roof, about 600 sq ft under the drip line. Figure it will last as long as I will. It was expensive considering it is to house chickens but I just thought one more thing I will never have to deal with again and the wife has a dry place for her hens.

lot of people are going with metal roofs here, BUT most insurance companies won't pay off on the damage when they get the hell beat out of them with hail. And Believe me you have never seen hail until you see it coming down the size of baseballs.

My roof is so screwed up with the sags and bags in it from people not knowing what the hell they were doing when the first part was built and then subsequent addition were made to it that there is no way you could put a metal roof on it with out having to basically tear it down to the top of the wall's and put on a new frame work, its that bad.

Them Chicken's are going to be thanking you when it heats up out there in your desert.

One things for sure it my roof didn't leak last night after the storm with it pouring rain most of the night I should be in pretty good shape unless I get hit with hail big enough to damage it again. Anyway everything under the roof was dry this morning.

Cant imagine an asphalt roof would fare any better when it comes to hail like that. Honestly I dont know how people live where that crap happens, I mean how many cars does the insurance company buy before they quit insuring against it?

You know it has been runnin about 20F cooler inside the coop than inside the house. built it with 1/2" osb inside walls and ceiling and the attic space is open so hot air blows through limiting any heat transfer. Sure hope it does well, chickens have a harder time with the heat than cold.

the right composite shingle can take a pretty good lick from hail and still stay together, but if the hail is big stuff like tennis ball and bigger it just tears stuff all to pieces, I've seen cars the looked like a drunk mad exwife got ahold of them with a ballpeen hammer. Where it really hurts is when it hails on a car lot, or like at the mall.

I've got hail strikes on my truck but its not bad enough to mess with it, even though the insurance would pay on it. I'm not going to trade the truck in so why bother with it.

Don't crowd your chickens they can take the heat, just not when they are crowded together. coop that big your going to be eating a lot of bird.

weather man is saying that tomorrow is suppose to be sunny and warm with no rain, after the last week and half I'm not making any bets on it being so. BUT if it is then I plan on trying to see if I can make a mess in the backyard because one thing for sure its not going to burn.

have the pattern ready to ram up, just need to clean the muller off and give the sand the ole spin-a-round for a couple minutes with a shot of methanol to liven it up some, then its into the flask and dragging out the burner and associated junk that goes with it.

Anyway I'm hoping for a dry day so I can see if I still know how to melt the gray metal.

Ok no rain today but I didn't get the part poured either, had company most of the day then I had to take some extra shingles back and get a refund.

I did get the muller unburied from beneath the belt grinder that I had put together which was sitting on top of it and get it wired back up and ran the thing for about 15 minutes while adding some methanol to the sand. SO sands ready to be pounded on. Now to drag the burner out and get things hooked up and see if the oil, and air lines made it thru the winter. Also need to connect power the fuel tank and check the heater and see if it needs some attention, tanks almost full of oil anyway it has enough in it for this pour.

So I guess the only thing left to do is get it in gear and melt some metal quick as I can round up some help if it doesn't rain in the next day or two.

We have been getting storms about once a week lately but its mostly just wind. Temps have come down more to the normal for this time range.

I guess I am lucky in that my foundry is pretty much just sitting ready to use. I did have to clear out loads of boxes that were stored in there but now all thats needed is for me to just make the time to get out there. Good luck with the iron pour, been quite some time since I have melted and and even then it was nowhere near the kinds of pours you do but it sure does stick in your memory just how hot that is.

I hear you on the chickens and space. We are all for the providing plenty of room, so much so that we will most likely never see a return in dollar terms on what we have put into the coop and run materials not to mention the labor. The 10' x 40' building is sectioned off into two 10' x 12' coops with a 10' x 16' room in the middle for storage. They have a 5' overhang on the east side of the building where their runs are so they get shade by noon. The runs are 12' x 24' with the bonus 16' wide area in the middle. All together they have 240 sq ft of coop, about 80 running feet of roost and just under 1000 sq ft of run area fenced 8' tall. I think 100 or so chickens would be very comfortable though we will probably stay between 60 and 80. Have to see what works for us and how many chickens a year I am going to want to process. Having that home grown chicken is one of the things we are looking forward to.

went and visited this Museum up in Guthrie Ok today its full of old machines and has and old cupola but I didn't take any photos of it today, in the background you can see the headstock of a 36" X 12' American Pacesetter lathe, wish I could play with it for a couple days. All the machines are in working condition is what I've been told, the place has some much stuff in it theres trails in between the machines.

Then I worked on the 22 for a little while making a butt plate for it

Then me and the shop monster watched the thunderstorms and kept and eye out for tornados the rest of the evening, that storm watching sure tired the little guy out.
