fired up the furnace today and melted some cast iron to pour a backing plate for a collet chuck that I was given for my 12" lathe. Here's a shot of the furnace drying out a little haven't fired it in some time and we've had a lot of rain here in the last 4 months.
Sorry bout the photo being on its side. hope the scrap stays in the crucible.
will have a photo of the good/bad part in the morning when I pull it out of the sand.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
neighbor came over so I pulled the part out of the sand so he could see it, looks like the iron will be soft enough to machine, but looks like it has a bunch of slag inclusions in it. hopefully I can turn all of that off, I made it extra thick. there was also some shrinkage which I figured that it would do, so I turned the side that goes against the chuck up and have about 5/16 of and inch that I can cut off to get rid of the shrink.
All in all a pretty good day I would say, seeing as how it started out cold enough that I wasn't really even going to do this today, but it warmed up and its suppose to freaking rain again tomorrow.
Breaks on the gating look pretty good nice gray color, I put the part in the furnace to cool down so will take a shot of it tomorrow.
But all in all for the first pour of the year, I'd say not to bad.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
got the casting out of the furnace this morning where I left it all night to cool down slowly, was worried that the furnace would be full of water seeing as how it sits right under the drip line of the shed roof and it started raining again sometime this morning, Crucible was dry when I opened the furnace up.
Anyway here's what I casted. Actually looks better then I was thinking yesterday now that I got the sand off of it, I was thinking that it had some slag inclusions, but looks more like the side that was facing the cope may of had some areas where the parting dust was pretty thick. Had nice fit up between mold halves as shown by the minimal amount of flash around the edge.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
been doing some cutting on the casting today.
casting in the lathe pretty much turned to size now to thread and fit the chuck, casting is turning really nice. Other then the slag inculsions its been nice turning this part with no hard spots which can and do tear up tooling, this is nice soft iron. whats going on the plate DA

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
well after a weekend of what seemed like almost constant rain and finding out that my fridge went on the fritz, today wasn't too bad with only a little sprinkle this afternoon.
High point of the day was getting to spend 500 Dollars on a new fridge then spending most of 3 hours getting it in the house and the doors switched around to the way I needed them to swing.
The Collet Chuck is on the lathe and with a some tweaking should be running pretty close to 0.0 runout, I'll be happy with .001 if I can get that close.

Dave,
I need a report on the .45/what is it? 90 or more? We have not seen the ultimate result. How about a video of you shooting it, with sound?

45/70
yes its done, except for one or two little things that I should look at, but really don't feel like tearing it apart.
Shooting it isn't the easiest thing as I don't really have anyplace to shoot it at, the other mitigating factor is shells are about $45.00 a box, so everytime you pull the trigger its $2.00
and it sounds like a damn cannon going off when you pull the trigger.

Re: Cincinnati Shaper
was going to cast up another one of the backing plates like I made for the collet chuck (which I have found to have some busted gear teeth in it) to see if I could get a little better casting then the first one, and so that I could have one or two spares laying around.
But its drizzling rain which in itself isn't a big deal, but knowing how the weathers been the pass 4 or 5 weeks hell it may flood in 15 minutes so I'll put it off to another day, maybe tomorrow.
