I was making some patterns yesterday and deep in thought, when a lightening strike hit very close. It's supposed to rain all week with storms. When ever it quits I'll have lots of stuff to cast.
I need to make a plate for my lathe. Something so I can use it for some wood turning.
Wife just invited me to go to Cracker Barrel, she must not want to cook. Gotta Go! :D

nothing like a big plateful of hashbrown casserole from Cracker Barrel, now I'm hungry.

round patterns are easy to make just chuck it up in the lathe and cut off what you don't need

Dave, I think you have the same disease that I have had all my life. The real fun is in making it. After it's done I lose interest in it and I am off to making something else.

the building is different every time even if its the same build, shooting one never changes except the impact point on the target and the recoil.

Don't get me wrong I like shooting as much as anyone else does, but when shells cost 40, 50 dollars a box I loose interest pretty damn fast.

found a box on the front porch this morning it had these two pieces of Claro Walnut in it. Been thinking of building another big bore single shot just for the hell of it.

the two photos are of both sides of the big piece

nice thing is no knots (well only a couple of really small ones), and NO Cracks. This was from the info given on the website I purchased it from as being cut in 2009 and Kiln dried for a year then stored for 6 years to finish drying.

Hey Dave,

If you are going big bore, and are not going out every week to shoot it, how about a .600 Nitro Express? Or if you want to get really out on the skinny branches, how about—No, forget it; forget I even said this—I was going to suggest a double barrel job like those that Purdy and Greener and the boys used to make for the elephant hunters, but of course that is pure insanity. It's the kind of thing I used to take on back when I was younger and didn't have any sense, and would then spend seven days a week for years making it, or sometimes failing.

I used to wonder how those old safari guys could take the punishment that those big bore rifles must have dished out. How many shots you can you fire before you just can't bring yourself to pull the trigger again. Of course if an angry seven ton bull elephant is charging you . . . ?

yea I've had a couple of other guys pop up with the double's scenario, bad as I would like to build one, there's just toooooo big of a learning curve to do one. Hell just regulating the barrels so they will hit reasonably close in the same 4 inch circle is an art in its self.

And what I'm fixing to hopefully get started on in the next couple of weeks will just about equal a .600, and no you don't get to know what it is yet.

I have to keep this on a level that I can do the build and be able to afford it. Plus this next rifle is my stay under the air conditioner build.

Now if you want to pull up some tools and build a double rifle, I'd gladly follow along on the build.

And I've had a big ass grizzly charging at me before, so yes there are times when you need something that can knock down a charging Elephant.

Hey, I just found a cast iron mold for a bookend on my porch. It's the Mayflower ship. I wonder if they poured Brass directly into this mold? I'll post a picture when I get one.
