quick update, last night I took the piece of shaft that I used for an arbor to hold the pulley with and cut a slot in it so the 3/8" broach I had would fit in it.

then this morning I used it to cut the keyway in the pulley that I made, still have to make a woodruff key of cut a straight keyway in the shaft probably make a new woodruff key so I can keep the shaft original.

And I took the transmission apart and swapped the shafts so that I could lay the thing down horizontal instead of having it standing up vertical. going to redo the engine mount and have it on top like is in the picture.

Latz I'll probably make it with wood but it will be split on the horizontal plane to make it easy to ram up. I do plan on casting the recess in it plus after some armchair engineering this morning I'm going to have the hub stick out the back about an inch which will give me more on the shaft, flanges will be casted on, this is a cake walk pattern to make after the other one. Just have to figure out if I want to eat up a bunch of maple to make it with our use some 2X stuff thats laying around. will redo the drawing to reflect the changes I'm thinking about. also I'm thinking of making it 5 inches instead of 6 in diameter.

That has definitely crossed my mind. Money is a little short or I would be on my way already.

I just found the oilers I told you about. They are Capped oilers that are made to have a wool wick in them, or I think you could use cotton line or nothing at all. They are 1/8" pipe thread. I'll get some pictures of them, there's 8 of them and one that's 1/4" pipe. Your welcome to them, very old school. Off of a printing press from the 20's. Probably about the same age as your shaper.

the ones on the shaper are mostly 1/8 inch pipe although from the pictures that I have found that show a complete shaper the ram is suppose to have drip oilers the ones with the glass body that you fill with like a cup of oil, there are some cheap import ones but their like 30 bucks a piece.

I could give those oil cups a good home on the shaper for you.

bought lumber to start the pattern for the pulley for the transmission today.

I remember you telling me about the drip oilers. Sounds like a casting project if we could find the glass tube. I had one somewhere, just not sure I still have it.

the glass tube won't be hard to find, I bought some 5 and 6 inch for my coffee roaster that I built, I would just have to do some research to find the outfit again. most of the miniature ones that people make they use clear plastic tubing for the well.

your right they would make a casting project, a person could make patterns for the parts or even just for the say round stock to make parts from. But I hate to say it but its been close to fifty years since I paid any real attention to what one looked like, and I never had one to tear up as my dad would of called it, the sawmill he worked at had hundreds of them that on some weekends us boys would get to to help service with pop and Mr. Bob Ware the millwright.

here's todays melt after changing the inline filter and adding about a gallon of diesel to the oil in the tank, also todays melt used almost a complete tank of oil which tells me that yesterday I wasn't flowing nearly enough oil. also I set the propane on the three pound mark on the gauge (remember gauge is broken and doesn't return to zero lowest it will go when gas is off is the one pound mark) and never moved it to increase the amount of gas going to the burner.

I also didn't have a fuel control valve on the burner (guess I need one after melting the wall pretty bad) and I didn't want to get into that hassle of using a ball valve to control with which sucks (ask me how I know after working on hot oil systems for 20 years) so the needle valve goes back on it before the next melt.

if theres something I didn't cover in my trying to melt the furnace episode of metal casting with Big Dave please feel free to ask I may actually have and answer

here's a shot of the inside or the furnace,

Image about the middle of the photo on the right hand side is the burner port, granted I had slagged the wall before but never to this extent. Oh well like they say your not having fun unless things are melting, and I diffidently had that going on today.
